    AYB just found out......

Yeah, it's pretty shocking stuff. I kept up on the thread and followed the case pretty closely, even reading some of the legal documents.

Sentencing wasn't scheduled until May, and is unlikely to happen now given the COVID-19 lockdown. But the charge Peter was found guilty of has a 10-year minimum sentence.

The weird thing is that I almost met PeterB when he came to town a couple of years ago for the DOTA 2 International event. He had asked me on Twitter to stay at my place but I missed the message because I was on a Twitter holiday at the time. So he stayed at an AirBnB, and whenever we were supposed to meet he bailed. Now I'm wondering what he was up to while he was here. I kind of don't want to know.

    Here's the thing.

Thinking about it, why is anyone all that shocked? I had been reading PeterB since like, 1998 when he trolled Maclots over at Apple Insider under the handle, "pcuser". I remember that he had on a number of occasions expressed a cavalier attitude towards Chronophelia.

For instance, I remember that though Jonathan Brandis was like 19 at the time, Peter was jonezing hard after a picture of him when he was in his younger teens. If we cataloged his 94 thousand posts at Ars, I'm sure we could find quite a bit of examples of this.

Though I've only seen a few samples of the evidence presented against him, PeterB's defense seemed to be "I was trying to uncover a pedo-pimp mom...no, really! I was going to come to the police, I promise!!! I just wanted to nab them with my 733+ forum BB code quoting skills!"

I'm guessing the prosecution didn't offer a plea deal. Why would they? Some of those damning texts collected by law enforcement indicated that Peter had prior experience.

I mean, I was shocked, but I wasn't that shocked. PeterB did always want to skirt the line of what was societally acceptable, and thought he was smarter than everyone else and didn't need to play by anyone else's rules.

Pretty bizarre that Ken Fisher had to actually show up to court to say that, no, Peter was not being assigned the "uncover a sekrit trafficking ring" case at Ars. Amazing that Peter thought he could get away with that.

Nice of him to pull his colleagues into this business..

Just an update and a coda of sorts to the whole story...

The sentencing finally came in last week. Peter is sentenced to 12 years in prison, plus 9 years monitored release after that, and will be required to register as a sex offender.

Thanks for the update JR. Here is a list of the proceedings of the case. I pity Peter.
