    Lego Space Ships UPDATED!

I was Googling around the other day and came across this site:
    http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?theme=Space

Suddenly I was transported back into my childhood. My parents bought me all sorts of Lego Space sets including the Command Center, one and two-seat Space Scooter, and the holy trinity of awesome space ships: The One-Man Space Ship (shown above), the Transporter, and the awesome Galaxy Explorer.

Looking at these classic Lego Space Ships filled me with overwhelming nostalgia. It made me remember how amazing my parents were to me, which made me happy (for the memories) and sad (for their passing) at the same time. For a few moments it was hard for me to breathe. My heart was beating uncontrollably.

I still have all the pieces for all these sets, stored away safely in clear plastic bins.

    Maybe I’ll build one again.

    UPDATE! Sunday September 15, 2013

I dug out my old Galaxy Explorer instruction sheet, and found the Rubbermaid bin with all my old Lego, and here is the result!

AYB fondly remembers Legos. He used to play with them *all* the time when he was younger...

...then last week AYB's wife told him she was tired of stepping on them constantly, so she made him put them away

    :o

"Maybe I’ll build one again. "

You should. One thing cool AYB has found about being older is there is far less prejudice against engaging in childhood persuits than when we were actually children.

    Here’s one AYB had:

Good to see it was considered a good set. had lots of fun with that

    :)

I made so many cool spaceships out of this bad boy:

Edit: Screw it, I'm too drnka to make the HTML parse right. But here's a link.

I never understood legos as a kid. I'd build things, but then get frustrated afterwards at the little I could do with it. I had more fun taking the monopoly car and pretending I was driving around different locations on different maps in the atlas. And the thing is, I actually do like building things with my hands.

I had a friend who was similarly frustrated by Lego. He didn’t like that you couldn’t do ANYTHING you wanted with it (ie; you didn’t have infinite granularity on the pieces)

For me, that was half of the fun, figuring out how to work around the limitations of the medium. You only had so many pieces and they were of limited type, so, given those constraints, what cool things can you make? Turns out it was a LOT of cool things. Mostly I made space ships though. :)

I often wonder if the "infinite possibilities despite strange limiting constraints" mind-set draws a lot of people to programming. You have all these weirdly-shaped pieces and with them you can make anything you want.

    Yes.

AYB is now infatuated with GI Joe of all things. This is something he hadn't given a second thought to since 1988, but now he just dropped about $300 on it....

Too bad it's not StarWars. Tons of #@#$% on clearance for starwars collecters/army builders. You can't find @#$%@#$% for Joe, however..

BUMP! I rebuilt my Galaxy Explorer! See the updated post above.

I used to have SO much Space Lego.

Took one of my kids on the weekend out to spend some of his Xmas gift cards. He bought about $100 worth of "Call of Duty Megablocks". More fancy yes, but man he sat and built stuff all day long....
