The February 2026 Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and this time I went all in, playing every demo I recommend to give you an informed guide. With a mix of Metroidvanias, deckbuilders, retro adventures, RPGs, and cozy indie games, the festival is brimming with variety. Here’s a breakdown of some of my top experiences from this year’s event.
For strategy lovers, Blades, Bows and Magic offers a compelling deckbuilding experience with three classes—Warriors, Archers, and Mages—each with strengths and weaknesses in a rock-paper-scissors style system. Units have distinct abilities influenced by this relationship, while Champions serve as powerful yet risky game-changers. Early battles feel approachable, but the difficulty ramps up, as I discovered when King Varen handed me my first defeat. The retro-inspired visuals complement the gameplay and make each encounter visually rewarding.
Clockwork Ambrosia was a demo I had been eager to try since last year’s Seattle Indies Expo, and it did not disappoint. The steampunk Metroidvania puts players in the shoes of Iris, an airship engineer exploring the mysterious island of Aspida. The standout feature is the weapon-building system, allowing players to tweak gunfire patterns, from basic bullets to charged and spread shots. Combat is challenging, exploration is visually stunning, and puzzles—often involving moving minecarts—add variety. Though I encountered a Steam screenshot error, it didn’t detract from the engaging gameplay and rich pixel art environments.
Dosa Divas is a surprising gem of a colorful RPG with interactive combat requiring precise timed button presses. My party included Samra, Amani, and a robot named Goddess. Combat feels dynamic, and mini-games such as cooking and fishing add depth to the village-focused story. Reputation mechanics and traditional leveling allow for character growth, and the strong LGBTQ+ representation adds a refreshing narrative layer. While initially tricky to master, the timing-based combat becomes satisfying and rewarding.
For fans of cozy adventures, Echo Isle captured the nostalgic feel of classic Zelda titles. Players navigate a magical island protected by a lighthouse, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, and acquiring upgrades like the Spring Leaf, which enhances mobility. The game’s intuitive controls, retro sound effects, and charming story provide a warm, approachable experience for all ages.
Steam Next Fest offers a unique opportunity to try demos before their full releases, and the February 2026 lineup is particularly strong. From deckbuilding challenges to weapon-building Metroidvanias, interactive RPGs, and cozy puzzle adventures, there’s truly something for every type of gamer.
With demos available until March 2, it’s the perfect time to explore these titles, experiment with mechanics, and discover your next favorite indie game. Whether you prefer strategy, action, or narrative-rich gameplay, this festival delivers a diverse and engaging slate of experiences.
