    I’ve started a new job!

Today was my first day at Demonware, a really amazingly cool software company based in Vancouver and Dublin. Demonware writes software that handles matchmaking, leaderboards, and other online services for video game companies, primarily Activision/Blizzard.

My job is a technical writer. It’s a contract position, but hopefully (crosses fingers) it will lead to a full-time gig.

What’s really neat about the company is all the cool tools they use. They will grab any tool if it’s the right one for the job. Just look at the list:

It’s also a really nice place to work. Lots of interesting and smart people work here. There are lot of them to meet. :) There is a ton of interesting work to do from a technical writing perspective-- tons of complex and powerful systems that could use more documentation. Anyway, I had a great first day on the job.

    Good luck!

BTW, don't see Lisp on the cloud tag, so you may have to slum with us Pythoneers!

    Jeremy Reimer on 2013-12-04 14:25:47.000

Well, Python and Erlang are the standard languages, but the company is very much all about using whatever the best tools available are for any task. Erlang is a functional language and as such is very similar to Lisp in syntax. Python is also very similar to Lisp in a lot of ways. So they basically picked the right languages for the job. :)

I’ll be getting up to speed on Python, of course, but I consider newLISP to be a tool in my arsenal, and I’ll use it wherever it can help me the most. That might just be to write my own tools to do simple scripting (I've actually done that already) or it might be to help make prototype web tools, or anything else. This company really doesn't care that much what tool you use to get a job done, just that you get it done and get it done well. I'm on board with that philosophy. :D

Oh, apparently the prototype for one of the biggest and most innovative pieces of tech was written in LISP, before it was rewritten in Erlang. :)

Congrats on your new job! :)

    Jeremy Reimer on 2013-12-05 14:01:57.000

Thanks! I'm really enjoying it so far. Seems like a good fit.

Man, hope it's going well at the new Gig!

AYB can't start a new topic

    :(

    Jeremy Reimer on 2016-03-20 12:15:57.000

Sorry about that, AYB. Lois reported a similar bug before, but I thought it was a one-off. I'll look into it.

    AllYorBaseRBelong2Us on 2016-03-21 05:55:47.000

Thanks JR, it's time to Smam about AYB's new PC

    :)

    Jeremy Reimer on 2016-03-22 15:32:04.000

I fixed it! Please make your new thread!

I want to hear about AYB's new PC. I am buying a new PC this year for the Oculus Rift.

    AllYorBaseRBelong2Us on 2016-03-24 21:40:37.000

Oculus Rift is a screen you wear in front of your face for VR applications?

AYB would like to see your writeup of it.

    :)

    AllYorBaseRBelong2Us on 2016-03-25 22:25:46.000

We should use pcpartspicker to configure JR his dreem computar.

    :)

    Jeremy Reimer on 2016-03-27 13:22:55.000

Yeah I'm waiting until June or so because I'm waiting for the Rift (or Vive, haven't decided which one yet) and because new nViidia cards are supposed to be coming out soon.

    Jeremy Reimer on 2017-05-11 11:00:41.000

    I built my computer!

Actually it was a while back (last year... ack!) but I have been very much enjoying it since then.

It is an i7 6800K, six cores at 3.5 GHz, with a nVidia 1070 GPU. And a HTC Vive headset. :)

    AllYorBaseRBelong2Us on 2017-08-09 12:36:57.000

    Oh sweet,

Still chugging along on the i3 skylake. Also going through vintage computer stuff. Got my old Quadra 650 and B&W G3 set up at the desk along side it.

I just destroyed two expensive Macintosh Floppy drives with a bad disk, though...
