Basically it's about this teenage guy (16-18 in the story) named Ranma Saotome. He's a martial artist and the heir to the Saotome School of Indiscriminate Grappling (Viz translated it as Anything Goes). 'Anything Goes' is a freestyle form of martial arts that combines bits of several disciplines into a form of freestyle combat.
Anyway, Ranma's big problems in life are several, and here are a few:
a. He's arrogant
b. He's got very little tact
c. He's got few skills outside the martial arts
d. His waste-of-a-human-being father Genma
When he was 5, nearly 6, Genma convinced his mom (Nodoka) to allow Genma to take the kid on a training trip that would eventually make him the best martial artist in the world. Sounds okay, right? It gets bad.
Basically, Genma's got no morals and even less decency. He has no honor and only uses people to further his own ends, namely being lazy and getting fatter from overeating, and mooching off others.
So Genma takes Ranma on this 10+ year training trip, and they travel all over Japan and eventually to China. All the while, Genma promises Ranma to several girls as a fiance, all for food or small amounts of money; and then he skips out on the deal. So Ranma has several legitimate fiancees, and all of them are martial artists of varying skill and style.
Meanwhile, since Ranma is basically alone with this honorless bastard, he's learning all sorts of crude habits and low-class morals. Genma makes him steal things, like food or money, on the pretext that it's a game! In the end, what it ends up with is Ranma has almost zero social skills, and doesn't really think before he opens his mouth, which gets him in trouble a LOT.
One of the last places they train is called Jusenkyo ("Pools of Sorrow"), which is a training ground of cursed springs. Genma dragged Ranma through China for months looking for this place, and the reason it took months is because Genma didn't bother to learn Chinese before looking for it.
Anyone who falls into one of the springs will be cursed to turn into the last thing that drowned in the spring, when they get splashed with cold water. Hot water restores their original form. The curse is incurable, the condition is temporary.
Genma falls into Spring of Drowned Panda. Ranma falls into Spring of Drowned Girl. So whenever Ranma gets splashed, he loses several inches of height and some muscle, and he becomes a stacked redhead.
Anyway, it's got a lot of humor, and I've skipped a lot of details. I'll talk about it more later, if I feel like it.

All anime is that odd?
I'm also partial to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Eva left a bad taste in my head. Though I haven't seen the movie ending, so maybe it just plain sucks, I dunno.
Nadesico was just a bizzare ass lovestory. It was doing ok between the times they killed off the annoying bastard and before they said teh whole thing is because of a retarded sub-anime. Bleh. Left it WAY open for continuing, and then didn't as far as I can tell.
