Rhapsody DR2 Guided Tour available

Hi everybody!

I've uploaded my Rhapsody DR2 screenshots, along with some commentary, to OSY.  You can get there from the main OSY page, then click on "Rhapsody DR2 Guided Tour".

It's totally fun being able to mess around with Rhapsody, a kind of a "halfway point" between Next/Openstep and OSX.  And it runs on Intel!  The screenshots are using Virtual PC for Windows, so I can run Rhapsody at the same time as I am running Windows, which is great fun.

The really surprising thing about the OS was how fast it was.  Without the Classic or the Carbon or the Quartz layers, OSX is really quite snappy... I hardly ever saw the "pinwheel" icon... somewhat annoying as I was trying to get a screenshot with the icon displayed!  Even running under Virtual PC it was still pretty quick, especially when you go into fullscreen mode.  Seeing the Apple menu and logo on a PC is wild, and using the development tools like Project Builder and Interface Builder, which have pretty much survived almost unchanged in OSX, gives me all kinds of kooky ideas.

I'm still going to keep working on getting GNUstep running under Darwin, but this is a really neat diversion while I try and figure that out (it's actually a GNUstep problem and not a Darwin one... GNUstep fails to compile with exactly the same error message on FreeBSD...  sigh...)

Dude!!

I've been trying to find Rhapsody DR2 for Intel CDs for EVER!

I have some originals, but they no longer read in any CDROM I can find.

DR2 for Intel was AWESOME!

If anyone can tell me how to convert a Virtual PC hard drive image to a normal image, let me know.  The copy of DR2 I have is a VPC image only.

You named a harddrive "duckie"?

What a quack-up!

the hard drive name defaults to the hostname of that computer.  When I got the disk image, it was from this site:

http://www.the-real-duckie.net

That's why the HD is called "duckie".  ;)

how big is the image?  You might be able to stick it on a CD?

It's 750 megs... a little large for a CD, but it's a .vhd file, a virtual disk image.  I don't know how to convert it into something non-virtual.

In any case I appear to have majorly fucked up.  In trying to get networking to work, I enabled NetInfo and it times out and won't start.  I tried disabling the netinfo startup daemons, but now it won't even boot the GUI.  I'm fucking frustrated... I can't undo the changes because my copy of Virtual PC is a trial and won't undo changes.. I didn't make a backup copy of the image, and the hotline server where i got the image is down, probably forever.   :(

At least you'll always have the memories.

UPDATE:  I fixed it, with some major Unix kung-fu.

It's booting, and I can get into the GUI again.  YAY!!!! :)   I can't get DHCP, the way Darwin does it.  I don't think Rhapsody supports DHCP at all.  But screw it, I don't need networking in Virtual PC, I'll just download whatever junk I want on my real PC and share a folder.

Oh, and I'm making a backup of the .vhd file right now!!

I'm using IE6; I've been able to see pngs before. Odd. Oh well, no matter at the moment.

Yup. I went to the PNG dev site, so I know I can see pngs.

Try right clicking and selecting "show picture" from the popup menu.

Anyone else unable to see them?

Anyone else unable to see them?

Of course not.  I use Mozilla.  :-)

Hey, thanks. Very cool stuff. I remember the days when the new Mac OS was suppsed to be Be, but I didn't really comprehend.  Rhapsody looks like a weird cross between System 8 and OS X.

And thanks for the screen shots of the older systems. I've never used a Mac before System 6.

heh, IE on OS X has given me some problems, sometimes with .pngs, but guess what? I can see the pics. I didn't even know it was .png thinking i would get a red x if it was.

I still don't know why IE loads classic WMP when i goto certain sites but the msoft faq said i should delete the classic version, which i did. So maybe i can play wmp type files with no probs now. Hmmmm....
