Would you give Kendo a try?

Evil Merlin

OK, I am seriously thinking about starting a real school. Whaddya all think...

Well SHIT, I hit enter by accident, and now cannot finish adding entries!

BTW I am the guy on the left... my student Jeff is on the right.

By accidentally pressing enter, you denied of of the "I'm too much of a lazy piece of shit to actually do any of that "outside" stuff. Those sticks look heavy" option. :D
Though it does look interesting. A friend of mine is really into Brazillian Ju-Jitsu, it looks interesting as well, but I fit firmly into the "too damned lazy" column.

Yeah I know... I am really not happy about it...

Maybe when Jeremy has the time, he can fix it...

It would likely take a lot of effort, seeing as how it was just hacked in yesterday. :) Though, if he coded it well it could be easier than I think. Have to see.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not pushing Jeremy for anything. OSY is free, and it's fun, I'm not going to hold the poll stuff against him at all.

I'm the first person who's voted in this?!

I know, I was just saying that if he really just hacked at it enough for it to function like a poll that adding additional anything to it may be hellish, due to it's unwieldy nature, hehe.

Yes. If you'll notice, my option wasn't listed. It would be dishonest to vote any other way. :D

Yes I "do" Kendo... been doing it for nearly 10 years (maybe 11, I forget).

I've been teaching Jeff (the guy who I am clocking) for about 2 now.

Tell your student to iron his pantaloons.

Oh, and judging by that picture, he got whacked in the head real good.  Notice the slight motion blur on E_M's stick.

Yoda,

The "pantaloons" are called hakama. You don't iron them (often), as they are supposed to have pleats in the front and back which are a type of recognition of the gods. Actually his hakama are in better shape than mine.

Yeah I wacked him good in this shot. What made it worse is he was attempting to do the same and jumped into it. This one stunned him for a few seconds.

I learn something new everyday.  :)  I will now never mistakenly call the 'hakama' a pantaloon (nor will I ever mistakenly iron them if I ever was fortunate enough to find a pair somewhere.)

I played kendo for a couple of years in Japan........

.......in a Junior High School club. :-D

Its pretty good for developing quick reflexes. I played against young kids, which I felt was a bit harsh (if you miss the target area, it can hurt).

I wish I had time to join a club in London; one thing I don't miss is trying unsuccessfully to wipe away sweat from my eyes, sa I couldn't reach them through the metal grill in the helmet.

Wait a minute...you don't 'play' Kendo now do you?  I mean, Kendo is a martial art right?  You don't 'play' Karate or 'play' Tae Kwan Do.  While it might seem like a game to most people, I think it's serious stuff...you don't 'play' it.

Not really, see Kendo is more of a sport than a martial art. Think of Kendo as Japanese fencing.

Kendo = way of the sword

For the sword related martial arts, most begin (and end) with Kenjutsu (or kenjitsu depending on the translation)

Kenjustsu = art of the sword

While Kendo does have Kata and other "martial art" stylings, it is not a true martial art, however most Kendoka (students of kendo) tend to also learn Iaido (drawing of the sword) or kenjutsu. However people that do so tend to pickup bad habits from Kendo if not careful.

So, just what all do you practice, EM? I've heard you talk about karate in the Lounge, and now this.
Evil Merlin

Fri May 24 09:16:47 2002

I practice Shaolin Kempo Karate
Magus

Sat May 25 06:41:00 2002

Do you teach that as well?
Evil Merlin

Sat May 25 13:45:44 2002

Hells no. I have only been doing Kempo Karate for a bit more than 4 years (my 5th year will start in October).

How much does it cost to get into Kendo anyway?  300-1k?  More? Less? (talking just a good beginners set of gear)

A good beginners set of boku (the armour) is about $300-$450 for a half decent set. The uniform (hakama and gi top) about $120, and a good (not chinese made) shinai is about $60.

Of course, always talk to a good instructor.
