Kill me now.

Okay, we have an important demo for an investor tomorow, so we're pulling out all the stops putting FreeBSD on this cool new micro-micro-case.  Takes a couple of hours to set up and configure everything, recompile the kernel, yadda yadda yadda.

Okay.  Run stand/sysinstall, run XF86Setup.  We know exactly what chipset it is, it's an S3 ProSavage PM133, the chip is an 8a25.  It's got 8 megs SDRAM onboard.  The Northbridge chipset is VT82C686B.  We could not know more about this graphics chip.  It's own mother does not know as much as we do.

So does XFree86 configure?  Shyah, right!

It configures and HARD LOCKS!

So, our Unix guru's bright idea is to grab the latest CVS of XFree and compile that.

OH FUCKING JOY.

It's been compiling for an HOUR now and shows no signs of stopping.  I may never get home.  I might as well sleep here.  Fuck this shit.

Plus, the president just trashed my GUI for being "too plain".  This is after it has gone through weeks of showing samples to the sales and marketing staff to get their feedback.  No, it's too fucking plain.  Well, what the hell do you want, dancing monkeys?  It's a fucking GUI!  *sigh*

Right now he is yakking our head programmer's ear off, asking dumb questions.  Better him than me.  Of course neither of THEM have WIVES to get home to...

Suckitude, dude.  Sorry.

Is FreeBSD the BSD you normally use at work?  Just curious.

Yeah, all the dev work gets done on FreeBSD, that's our target platform.  Our lead programmer (also the Unix guy) wants to move to Darwin for technological reasons, also, because he's a major Apple-head.  But Darwin (aka Mach/BSD) isn't that bad, it has some good features.

The BSD license is teh win.

Wouldn't that cause your hardware spending to go up exponentially?

Beware of *nix gurus; they have no concept of time. This is largely because they don't actually have to do any work with their computers...

LOL!

Sorry Jeremy, but I can't help laughing.

Besides, think about all the cool shit you're learning. You're becoming very *Nix l33t.

;)

Wut?  Unless someone decides to run Darwin on Macs, there's no reason why it should cost anything.  I'd probably run Darwin on a cheap x86 box.

I hear you Jeremy. I was trying to get XF 4.0.2 to play nice with an old Pentium box I've got at home. It's pretty basic, an old ATI Mach 64, should be cake easy eh? Fuck no. A little 'XFree86 -configure" and it locks the fucking box. Grand. (granted, I think I could have telnetted in and fixed it, blah blah blah, as the pengys like to say, but that's a little fucking hard when there' nothing to telnet in with...) It right puts me off messing with X completely. (it worked perfectly with my Radeon 64's, but freaks out with Radeon VE's. How fucking fun!)

Uhm... I think that somebody at this point should jump in the thread and start insulting you and your relatives.

I actually decided not to post this little experience in the Battlefront, simply because I lack the emotional energy to deal with treatment and eMA and their predictable reaction.  Our Unix guy, when he FINALLY got the X Server working, declared many, many times how much a pain in the ass it was.

It's working now, but we stayed until 8:00 and it still hadn't compiled KDevelop, so our lead programmer, the guy who kept me at work until 8:00 in the first place, decided he would just bring his dev station in from home and use that for the demo.

AUUGH!  THERE WAS NO NEED TO STAY AT ALL!!!!

So right now we're waiting for these bigshot investor guys, and we're all in nicely ironed shirts and the stupid little S3 Savage Shit3D box is STILL installing Kdevelop...

And now I have to learn how to use CVS.  FUCK!  My brain isn't big enough for all these tagnuts!!!!

You should get some direct quotes from him, just in case you need some ammo/fodder for the BF.  ;)

I'd like to say "I feel your pain" but right now I'm running CAT5 into the new server room.  Be back in a bit!

Whenever I do that, treatment simply says that I am lying about his very existence.  I ought to vidcap him running *nix and bitching about it, and then link to it.... nah, too much effort just to silence a juvenile fucktard...

Uhh, I've *never* had a Xfree -configure work correctly for me.. I just edit the config file by hand, it's not *that* hard.

I *apologize* for all the asterisks and "quotes" in my posts, I never realized how annoying it was until I *read* what I had written.
