What's the deal?

Ars is the first internet board I've ever been part of. Over the last year or so I've developed a kinship to some and a dislike for others. It seems that the whole public forum thing is an interesting socialiogical phenomenon. You form 'relationships' with people you've never met, nor probably ever meet. What is the draw? Sometimes I can't wait to see what is going on in a particular thread. JR - you seem to be quite a veteran: What do you get out of it? Have you ever met any of the people you meet on the IntarWeb? Positive or negative experience. Anyway...interesting.

I prefer never to meet Internet people in real life.

The one time the two worlds ever collided was when I posted a message in the Lounge about how I got fired from EA (do a search on "Just got canned" -- it's a thrilling thread) -- this was back when the Lounge was still free.

anyway, most people who replied didn't know me, but a certain person who was still at EA decided that this was a perfect opportunity to air a bunch of grievances that he was too much of a pussy to tell me to my face.  His name was Chris Moorehead, and he was a fucking moron-- he slept half the time at work, would leave his fucking cell phone behind while he went off to do who knows what (probably jack off) and it would ring CONSTANTLY on and on and on and on--- I finally answered it and said that he wasn't here, so stop calling, and this pissed Moorehead off to no end.  It had been ringing constantly for about ten minutes, and Moorehead didn't come back for another hour, so I figured I was justified, but he didn't think so.  It really pissed him off.

Anyway that was the only time real life and Internet life collided, and it wasn't fun.  I like to keep these things separate.

On the other hand, I met my Wife over the net...

Totally fucked up, but other than meeting via the net (I was posting to some message board a few years ago and got into some good debates with her), we have had a normal courtship, engagement, and now happy marriage.

JR, are you saying that you wouldn't want to one day meet with OW, AYB, IG, or even me?!  I'm saddened. :(

i almost met someone from the forum. it was from the xlr8yourmac fora. He was in Hk for a visit. long story short (well its not really a long story in the first place) we talked on the phone but both of us were to busy to meet up. Either way i don't think the real life personalities are close to what we are used to on the boards.

i wouldn't go out of my way to meet people like the ars meets they have but i wouldn't avoid it either.

Surely JR would want to meet the Mighty AYB :(

AYB would be happy to meet him.

There goes the OSY meet idea.

On another note, I don't own a cell phone either. I hate the damn things.

Oh, I could make an exception for the OSY crew.  We are after all a bunch of exceptional people.  ;)

Actually, as much as the people here amuse and entertain me, and as much of a pillar of this place I am, I'd more than likely dodge any attempt at a meet, largely because people would want to get pictures, and having my picture taken is one of the things I most hate; and I try to limit the amount of times it needs to be done.

It's nothing against any of you all, though.

Here's a question for fux0ringmoron:

Youdabeetch is easy to explain, and I remember Sludge Vohaul from the Space Quest series.

But where is "Fester Blatt" from?

fuX0ringM0r0n

Wed May 1 01:46:45 2002

Hmmm,

Fester Blatt is the ugly mofo that runs the World'o'Wonders tourist shop on Phleebhut in Space Quest 3.  You had to buy the thermoweave undies from him to walk on that furnace of a planet, Ortega.  He also made an appearance in the unfortunately shitty Space Quest 6.

http://www.spacequest.net/sq3/fester2.gif

Sludge Vohaul was, as you know, the big villain in Space Quest 2 and 4.  Also an ugly mofo.

http://www.spacequest.net/sq2/sludge.gif
http://www.spacequest.net/sq4/vohaul.gif

Labion Terror Beast was a creature that vaguely resembled the Warner Brothers Tazmanian devil cartoon character.  You had to toss him a rubix cube to distract the poor dumb thing.

http://www.spacequest.net/sq2/terrorbeast.gif

My next name was going to be 'Latex Babe of Estros', but despite my efforts, I haven't been able to complete this plan.

Damn you, daaaaamn you all to Hell for making me search for those Space Quest picts that I found on a nostalgic website that I have been looking at for the past 30 minutes.  *sniff*

I miss adventure games.  Why do games have to be high res 3D shooters now?  I want my pixelated 2D adventure game graphics back!

Madan

Wed May 1 11:22:25 2002

I hear ya, FuXoringYoodaFesterVohaul.

Neverwinter Nights has me drooling for its release but why did they have to move everything off of the infinity engine.

Sure, the figures were small and everything was 2D but the graphics were rich and sumptuous, with an amazing amount of detail in the buildings and items.  Now, Bioware is using a 3D engine and, yes, the lighting is much cooler, the shadows are much cooler and the effects are much cooler, but everything else looks like polygonal, surreal teletubby crap.

*sigh*
