Something that impressed me about MS.

I received the new copy of MS InterDev.

Anyways, I open the box and, while MS InterDev costs only 80 bucks(edu), it includes a crippled version of MS Visual Studio AND MS SQL 7 Server.  Granted, the SQL is only a client and none of the server components are added(so I can't use it for anything) but, still, that's really good of them to add this.  You can tell that MS has always valued their developers.

I can't use the Studio crippleware for anything but the Server Client will DEFinitely help me polish my ASP at home. :) Kudos.

are you talking about the SQL Desktop Engine? It's basically SQL Server with limits set on number of connections, database size, etc. Other than that it functions exactly like the "real thing" I use it on my web server at home and will use it here at work in about a week.

I almost forgot. for another $10 you could have gotten the newest version of what VI wishes it could have been. :) VS.Net Pro is $99 at edu.com something to think about if you find yourself with an extra hundred bucks. :)

Mmmm, I can see the smamming now! :)

sadly it's on my private 192.168 network, and I feel it largely unnecessary to pay more money to my ISP for a static IP just so I can do my ASP.Net development from work on my home box. :)  I may someday purchase a domain name and toss a site up on our server here, but I think that might get my ass fired. :D

How do you setup a local webserver?  This I'd like to know! :)

(nitpick)Actually what you have is only the server part.(/nitpick)

The client (i.e. SQL Enterprise Manager) is not included, so you have to control it entirely from the command line (osql.exe). And that's a pretty neat thing to do too, so you can learn all the tricks 'n' stuff :)

You can tell that MS has always valued their developers.

Heh. That's weird because everybody is saying that M$ hates developers, hides seekrit APIs, and has a division dedicated exclusively to NOT producing development tools :)

I would like to do both IIS on WIndows (I can get IIS for Win2000 Pro can't I?  For free I mean?)

And Apache on Windows and Linux actually.

Any input or websites would be helpfull.

If you have Win2k Pro, IIS can be installed from the CD. Go to add/remove programs, select add windows components and install internet information server (or whatever is called there, I don't remember :) ).

If you accet all the defaults, you'll have a default site at http://localhost/ with the files placed in c:\inetpub\wwwroot

You can safely zip the whole content of that folder, save it somewhere, remove everything and start putting there your html or asp pages.

I'll let some apache expert in guiding you for that :)

No, I have that too. To be honest, saying I have only the "client" sounded strange, you're right but that's how it's referred to in the VI manual.

It's basically SQL 7 Server Crippled.  Desktop version, I guess.  Does anyone know the limits on this? If the limits aren't too steep, I might use it for my own site.

I'd love to patronage MS but their full version of SQL is way too expensive. Even at EDU rates.

BTW, I think MS is great with their developers. I think they always have been.

It's the customers that they dick around, imho.

10 concurrent connections (not a problem if you grab all the data you need and close the connmection real quick. That's a Best Practices kind of thing anyway) and 2GB per datbase. Not as limiting as it would seem for a small site. :)

Hmmm.

That kicks arse, man.

Thanks Hit.

That InterDev was a most delicious bargain.
