New System

My parents have been needing a new system for a long time and for some reason have had to put it off.

Their current system is a Macintosh 6200 with 24MB and a 4gig HD (which I installed as the original died.  I am indeed 733T to have fixed that royal pain in the ass!)

The modem is a 14.4kbps antique, and this particular mac has hardware handshaking issues that prevent an upgrade.

The processor is a 75mhz 601.  It is pokey indeed.  The sound reminds me of an old "Simon's Quest" lcd handheld that I once had (it's still better than the sound on my powercurve)

With Mother's day, Father's day and both of their birthdays comming up in May/June, I thought the Mighty AYB would surprise them with a much needed upgrade despite the fact that his income is very limited.

Here's what I have

Antech ATX Jewel Case (blue):  250W PS [had this laying around]

FIC PA-2013 Socket 7 with 450mhz AMD K63
256 Crucial Pc133[bought these off of agora for a total of $90]

Diamond Viper V550 16MB TNT [this also was surplus, it was the original card I put in my main BX system]

Western Digital ATA/33 13gig HD [I was using this one for Mandrake Linux on my dual, so I need another]

Creative Labs ISA 56k modem [this one was surplus since it didn't survive the transistion to Win2k, hopefully I can get it working in XP now]

D-Link 10/100 Nic [I may swap it out for a Linksys Base10]

Acer 52X CDROM [It was in my main system and I thought it broke.  It is working now, :shrugs:]

15" NEC monitor [from my very first computer, an NEC 166mmx]

Old Cannon Color printer [needs cartridge]

What I need:

Windows XP Home
PCI sound card
Speakers
Mouse
Printer Cartridge

Nice of you to build your parents a "new" setup. I imagine they'll appreciate it significantly.

Just hope all their files aren't in Mac...

Maybe you should buy a 20 dollar copy of MacDrive, just in case?

What's your address?  I'll send you a sound card.  Probably have a spare PS/2 or USB mouse hanging around.

/me rummages through my assorted computer detritus

I even have an ISA Sound Blaster 16 w/ RAM expansion, if yer interested. ;)  The only spare speakers I have a my mid-range Altec Lansing, but I'm not ready to part with them yet as they sport dual inputs.  Your parents' sound needs probably aren't as stringent as ours would be, so I'd bet that a pair of $10 speakers would do them just fine.

Indeed I do.  Now if Lycos' system will ever be stable enough for me to actually reply to the damn message... :angryfire:

I'll check my stash when I get home tonight.

this will indeed be a sweet machine.  All they need is better internet access.  They can still use Office on the Mac, but they have other needs and this will be more than powerfull enough :)

Alas, they'd like to use windows, and a "cheap" iMac will prolly run $400 and up, I need only spend about $150 more to finish this machine which will run XP

Bah, I just bought 2 G3s for less than 100. (of course, one goes 66MHz, and the other 120, so I don't imagine this helps one little bit. They also lack monitors. Boo.)

The Macs (any of 'em) on ebay are 'cheap' only when compared to their original prices.  I can't justify the 'used' prices there when brand new (and certainly faster) PCs can be had for around the same prices.

The G3 started at 233Mhz, not 66
