Btw, the issue with x86's lesser precision in FP is based on very dated information.  It may be true or it may be untrue,  So it may not be relevant anymore.  An interesting note that DF brought up is the fact the x86 actually does 80-bit Extended Precision on 64 bit computation.  this extension on precision is done internally.

Of course what BadAndy is referning to are trigonomic functions.  I have no idea how that is handled in hardware on the x86, it might still be true today but for regular FP ADD, MUL, DIV, SUB, and SQRT it's true to say that this extended precision gives it better accuracy, unless there is some sort of hardware bug.

yeah, i think i pointed that the precision had to do with specific cases and had no bearing on the what most of would actually be needing.
