I'm not sure what I would gain, except for the really nifty grouping of similar windows on the taskbar.

It might be worth it just for that.

What do you think, should I go for it?

(*) yes

Well, I installed it.

I guess I'll have to wait and see how much I like it.

At least OSY still works.

I assumed OSY went down because you were updating to Apache.

Nah, I'll try that tomorrow or some other day.  That was enough for one night.  I gotta get to sleep!  ;)

It's bound to be a little slow, I'm defragmenting my main Win2k, er XP drive in the background.

XP offers no real benefit over 2000 except it takes up a bit less memory.

That may be an oversimplification, but thats the way i see it.

You have not used XP that much then Duff...

I'm using it right now!

Also I've had it since RC1, so um enlighten me.

XP apparently has fewer compatibility problems than 2K but I've no experience with that since I've never had compatibility problems with 2K.

XP also has ClearType which is nice for LCD's, but I don't use LCD's.

I'd say XP's main benefit is to get a REAL OS for those poor fuck's still on 9x.

Actually, I prefer the way ClearType looks on my monitor at home to the way it looks at work on the laptops we have. At work, the "illusion" of using just the red or blue parts of the pixels doesn't work, they're too large, and it looks awful. But, at home, I've got my res at 1600x1200 (or thereabouts) and it looks smooth as silk. So, give it a shot if you haven't yet. It's yummaliscious.

It's okay so far.  I like the built-in firewall, as I had lots of trouble with Zone Alarm freezing Win2k, and I don't like firewalls that are always screaming at me with giant red and black alerts of death just because someone wanted to access my web page.

I love taskbar grouping.  I LOVE this.  Keeps all my dozens of IE windows organized.

All I need now is a proper way of preventing popup windows in IE and I'll be completely happy.  Yes, I know Mozilla does it, but I don't like Mozilla.  All IE needs to be the perfect browser EVAR is a way to prevent unauthorized popups.  anyone know of any free utilities that do this that actually WORK?

Actually, it looks quite good on the various CRTs that I'm using here.  Dell (Trinitron), NEC, Sceptre -- ClearType is teh win all around.

Keeps all my dozens of IE windows organized.

You can say that again.

I loved it so much (I was a big Be head :) ) that I have it set to group after 2 windows from the same app. It rocks.

How do you specify the number of windows before it starts grouping?
DuffMan

I've grown annoyed with grouping, and turned it off :(

Mozilla tabs have made it pretty much obsolete for me

To specifiy the number of windows, get TweakUI XP from the XP Power Toys, expand the Task Bar group, select grouping and go nuts. A few more options in there too.

Either TweakUI like Merlin said, or just add a REG_DWORD named TaskbarGroupSize to this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\
