HitScan and the Apple Evengelist

HitScan

Sat Mar 23 16:25:41 2002

So, I mosey on up to our Reference desk this fine morning to see why in fact, it will not let the same people print to it's shared printer that it would but 2 days before. Some fiddling, and it appears to work. All is well.

Before I can retreat back to the "Tech-Cave" (my office) a gentleman looks rather obviously around the side of the desk to see what it is I am using. He remarks "Oh, an LCD." I say (being quite wordy) "Yep" to the retort: "But not as good as the new Mac." I freeze. What hell hath been wraught upon me that I should travel down this path?
"Have you ever noticed that whenever Apple does something people try to copy it?"
"I guess so"
"Doesn't that tell you something?"
(Red Alert! Evengelist! Prepare to suffer!)
"I'm an Apple Evengelist."
Confirmation!, repeat, Evengelist Confirmation!
"I'm told you're the guy to see about hooking up a ZIP drive to the Mac in there."
"Yes"
"The guy in there told me I couldn't, but I said it's USB, 127 devices, etc."
(Pain setting in) "No, it shouldn't be a problem, it doesn't need drivers though does it?" (In all actuallity, the lab assistant told him that he couldn't make the descision as to it being alright or not, which he's right, I'd have his ass in a sling)
"Nope, it's iOmega, it's already in there."
"OK, I'll let them know."
"So are you ever going to update the OS?"
(Groaning inside. Outlook for swift conclusion: grim) "Well, probly not to 10."
"Oh no, but 9.1 is better than 9.0.4. I'm running 9.1 at home" + (something about a home network and a small server, file sharing, whatever)
"Yeah, it probly needs done. I'll look into it."
"And Explorer? It's up to 5.1(or something)"
"Yeah, probly do that at the same time." (Wrong! Software updates doesn't actually update anything! to the web with you! ahhahaha!)
"If you need any help let me know." (smug look)
(Hold the phone! If *I need help*? Where do I work? What's my job title? Who fucking set the thing up when the incompetent previous ITS fux0red it? Bah! I neglected to mention that I did in fact know a thing or two about Macs because I like to have a hand in all facets of computing. No sense validating his position in my computing "house." )
"OK." (stiffled eye roll. pain tolerance decreasing.)

He leaves. Hurrah. Nearly dropped off homemade business card. Made me consider upping the timescale on renovating the lab, which would involve the Mac being placed anywhere else, and some other modifications. I hate evangelism. (almost forgot the part where he mentioned the new commercials that Pixar did. The one where the iMac2 does the mirror joke to a guy sounds funny, but that's about it. He was a little too excited...)

What's worse, I'm not sure what the hell made that damned printer start working again.

Heh, is this guy assuming that Apple invented the LCD or something?

The Masta' of All that is Sucktacula' thinks this guy is a tool.

AYB: It was a Gateway Profile 3. One of those All-in-ones with an LCD screen that have been out longer than the iMac 2. I didn't care one way or the other about sharing that with him though. It would have only prolonged things. Ick.

that does suck yes.

However I'm having my own problems on the other side of the fence. For some really fucking annoying reason my good friend makes it a point to put down the mac whenever the topic of computer comes up. I don't get it!? Really fucking annoying.

My other friend and I sometimes discuss the new software/hardware releases in the computer industry. Sometimes we discuss work releated issues or networking issues. He's 1337 in networking and web development. So I ask him for any hints that might be applicable to the Mac. He's been over and seen OS X. He likes it but says the price of the mac is to much for him to get one. Anyway he's open minded and we can have a healthy discussion between the merits of OS X and Win2K. Ironically he sees more potential in OS X and I tend like Win2K a lot more.
But then my other friend just likes to bash the Mac. He doesn't do it because he doesn't like macs. He has no opinions of desktops at all. He doesn't like computer related stuff even though he's an IT boy at MCI worldcom. Its just something to use and deal with day to day and nothing more. I can accept that. Yet he likes to rag me, as good friends do to each other, but at times that can be annoying. My other friend who i can have discussions with tends to poke fun at me too, like one time someone was talking about how they got a firewire card for their pc and we got into a discussion about firewire and what camera's are good for it and so on. Then this guy asked me why i knew so much about firewire. I told him that i had firewire already and he look surprised, then i had to explain that powermacs have had firewire for a while. You see i never mentioned that i had a mac or even said that mac's had firewire first, it was more a 'matter of factly' kinda deal to explain why i had some experience with firewire. Then the person who was discussing about his firewire card asked me why i had a mac and not a pc? Huh? Why did the topic sway in that direction. My friend jumped in an just said that I was 'weird' hence why i owned a mac. I knew he was ragging me so i just brushed it of, but you have to understand its one thing to have run ins with mac evangalist and another being a regular pc/mac user and then asked almost everytime when computer discussions arise why you own a mac and not a pc.

So yeah, you met this one annoying guy. Whoopie!

In the last one year I can tell you about at least 10 people who question my choice of platform as if I were wrong. I don't mind, "cool, you use a mac," or just a nod that I use a different platform, but, "you use a mac? why? everyone uses pc's so why don't you?"

FUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!

DO I LOOK LIKE A GOD DAMN FUCKING SHEEP TO FOLLOW THE FUCKING CROWD!!!!

I'm not say pc users are sheep but the mentality one must have to suggest that you should use a computer that everyone uses FUCKING ANNOYS ME!!!!!!!!!

FUCK I OWN MOST OF THESE PEOPLE IN TAGNUTERY. FUCK THEM BECAUSE I WAS USING PC'S BEFORE THEY EVEN DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE COOL TO HAVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS. I WAS USING PC-DOS, DR-DOS, MS-DOS, BOOTING OF FLOPPIES, FUCKING AROUND WITH HARDWARE AND GETTING CUTS FROM BADLY MADE TOWERCASES LONG BEFORE MOST OF THE GUYS MASTURBATED TO PORN ON THE INTERNET.

Ahrgh!!!!!!

Anyway, I'm not apologising or justifying the mac evangalist. I think thats stupid, but equally the resistance that a mac user meets from pc users can be overwhelming too.

If you were ever on the side of the mac user fence you might understand what i'm talking about.

I'm so sick and tierd now a days that i try to avoid computer discussions of all types. And if i hear mac bashing from pc users I don't jump in either. I just tend to point out certain 'facts' but otherwise i don't bother. By pointing out facts i mean that i try to explain certian things about the mac platform. Like the firewire discussion I pointed out that Apple was one of the creators of FireWire which would help explain why the mac has firewire by default rather then suggesting that mac has firewire because macs are superior as some evangalist might try to do. Makes sense? I'm not propping up the mac, i'm just explaining why there are differences due to the different focus from each company and its respective platfrom.

meh, I don't care.

I feel your poopy pain!

Well, no I don't, but I do do what your friend does. :)

There was this one kid at college who was pretty easy going, who I knew liked Macs.  So I always called him 'Mac User' instead of his name, "Hey MMMMMac User!  How you DOING.".  he took it in good humor when I asked him (constantly) how many times a day he licked his Mac.  I thought it was funny.  he thought it annoying  :cheesy:

i also have been known to call someone "You Goll Damn Mac User!" right to their face, but only if I know that the person dislikes Macs incesently.  I have done something like this to IG on occasion as it is so much FUN! :)

Anyway, I'm a silly creep.  I know! ;)

OW: Yeah, I know its no big deal (Hence your "Whoopie" ;) ) But you have to remember my style. And my style is this: Bitch early, Bitch often. ;) I wrote that not 10 minutes after he left.

Also, while this may happen often to you, It has never happened to me before. I just don't "talk shop" with random strangers, and me and my friends only discuss PCs to the point of "Check out this new game", "Check out this new site", or "Looky what I got!" We don't ever really discuss Mac/PC stuff.

Plus, one has to remember that I hate evengelists.
Me to evangs:
I give no fuck as to what you think of my computers! Why do you persist in telling me that I am mistaken and need to invest my money into Corp X instead of Corp Y? Are you really that fucking lonely and boring? (That one would certainly drive it home for them, heh.)

Ah well, this is why I work in the Cave.

Yes, that's really fucking annoying.  I mean, it's not like you've chosen to breath methane instead of oxygen.  It's a fucking computer.  Besides, they're not even giving you a valid reason to "use" a PC.

You should have slapped them with your mighty penis of wrath, though.

Funny thing is, i even get that "Why did you get a Mac?" thing when I pop out my iBook.  I talk about price/performance and battery life, or sometimes I'll just say "for something different".  It's pretty funny actually!

I try not to get too defensive.  After all, I'm a multi-platform guy.  The other day I hooked up the iBook to my PC and transferred my Word.X document over to the PC, loaded it in Word 97 and printed it off.  Today I think I'll copy over a shitload of MP3s I downloaded on the PC over to the iBook so I can listen to them while I write.

Standards are a good thing.

Yes! Such is why I've got a ancient Alpha in my basement, and dearly want someone with a lacking sense of judgement to sell me a mac than can handle OSX for dirt-ass-cheap. Such luck is not likely to be mine however.

Standards are a good thing.

Indeed! :)

There's a simple solution to your problem:

Keep a bag of MacIntosh apples and a sharp paring knife laying around. Next time he shows up and begins his discourse, grab an apple and the knife, and begin viciously cutting it up. Pop the pieces in your mouth, and let the juice run down your chin while spitting partially chewed chunks at him with every curt reply.

He'll get the message. :)

xspung, lol, yeah thats a good idea. :cheesy: ;)

Hitscan, i didn't mean you could/should not bitch. I just wanted to bitch to as it was only last weekend that my friend had to make some snide mac remark.

I also wanted to point out that we have the over zealous platform users who have this strange need to evangalise their platform, then we have the other side of the coin which is a majority pc users who fail to realise that the pc is not the only platform one can choose, certainly not because its 'common' or that 'everyone has one'.

I'm not pissed or mad at all. Just venting. :)

Glad to see that Jeremy knows what I'm talking about. However I do like xspung's idea, too bad I don't like Apples though, but I'm sure I can instill some fear in those that bore me with their stupidity.

Did you see Riscrockets reply to me when I bitched about Apple's pricing plan? What an idiot. He apologises to much for Apple where as I was trying to suggest that Apple realise that they have a very good alternative to Windows (well its all the same anyway) but they have to stress the price/performance ratio better, read as: lower the price so I can buy a new Mac.

No, I didn't see that.

I was just thinking, It is a sad thing when we define someone as esteemed or otherwise based soley on the computer platform they prefer.

But do you know what's sadder still?  It's when we define *ourselves* based on that same criteria.

That's why OSY is so great.  It transpires the "racial" gap between Mac and PC users to the benifit of all humanity :)

You can always break into your apple bag, hand him one and say, "Here's your new Mac." :)

See how those apples will come in handy? They work on so many different levels.
