You know, the installation routine hasn't improved at all since '98.
Well, to make a short story shorter yet, this distro wouldn't boot as it couldn't detect the built in IDE controller of my Tiger MP.
For my trouble I had to go boot XP off of the emergency disk and restore the XP mbr. now I'm back to the worlds best desktop OS.
Linux -Meh!

I have plenty of machines, but not enough time. :(
I haven't even booted up BeOS in a week! ;)

I'm eventually gonna play with Mandrake 8.1 and Debian 2.2 (I think that's the latest)
Mandrake 8.2 came out a few days ago. The latest stable release of Debian (their term) is 2.2r5 Potato. I believe their current testing version is the 3.0 release, but I may be incorrect.

I telneted into a Red Hat 6.2 box today.

To feel superior over people who use their computers to do actual work, I would think. :)
(of course, I installed Openstep for kicks, but even that 1989-era OS is vastly superior to Linux today)

Well, maybe it didn't come out right. I was intending for it to be a slam on Linux and Linux users.
Naw, I think that point came across loud and clear. I've been investigating how Linux might help my current organization right now and in the future. But time for me is short (i.e. learning how to use it to its best advantage) and users like treatment and missman leave a very bad taste in my mouth, so to speak.

Same here. Our new product runs on FreeBSD so I figured it would be worthwhile to investigate how well I could run that OS in an office environment. It took far too long to learn how to do even the simplest things, and when you have people like treatment and philmes et al who would rather insult you and rattle off ad-homs against anyone who dares criticize Linux, it's hardly an endorsement for the platform.
In the end I gave up and just upgraded everyone's desktops to Win2k. Everyone's happy now.

For web/ftp/dns servers, use FreeBSD.
For Firewalls, use OpenBSD
For funky hardware experiments, use NetBSD
For the desktop/workstation, Windows 2000/XP
For the *nix workstation/desktop, use l00nix unless you run ppc. then OS X.

I concur, wholeheartedly. I've toyed with various *nux distros but to be honest, I hesitate to ask questions in LKR for fear of having to deal with people like that. Now, I'm sure that there are plenty of people on the Linux side that will help without batting an eye, but I get the impression that I'd be opening myself to hostility for being a primary user of Windows and being part of the BF.

No doubt.

Linux users need to learn how to properly help people and provide explicit instructions when doing so. After a month of dicking around with it and numerous reinstalls, I've finally figured out RH7.2, at least to the point where I can install video driver updates without a screen full of errors and dependency problems (and what a bunch of Voodoo doo-doo that exercise is) and got Q3A running properly. I even managed to get a game-server browser going after grokking what "place Qstat in the PATH" friggin meant (BTW, it means place the Qstat executable, which is made available by compiling it using the "make linux" command at a shell prompt, in /usr/bin; but they never actually tell you that directly. I guess people are just supposed to have some sort of divine inspiration to figure it out.). My next adventure will be attempting to update Mozila to RC1.
Linux runs decently, but it doesn't seem any more stable than XP, nor is it as snappy and quick. It's surely not for the average user, or even the above average user unless they've got plenty of time on their hands to learn all of the inane gyrations and acrobatics necessary to make it do your bidding. Since I am unemployed I've had that time and have nothing better to do than bang my head against the wall anyway. Once I get Mozilla RC1 installed, I'll do some googling to find out how to repair the walls in my computer room.

This is pretty much how he replies to anyone who dares criticize Linux.
It doesn't exactly help dispell the impression most people have of Linux users.
