Hmmm... i'm bored and need a challenge...

OscarWilde

I'm bored and I need some intellectual challenges. I was thinking about getting some puzzle books which i'll look for when i pass by a book store.

I need something to read about though.

pi sounds kinda interesting but its more historical stuff then anything else. Natural log e, maybe, but thats doesn't sound to mind boggling to be interesting.

I was considering going back to my favorite subject of chaos but its such a wide field. I love the concept of the butterfly effect. For those that know little or nothing about it, i'd read about it, very very cool concept.

Maybe the ratio of the surface area of spheres to its area (and its relationship to mass?). I actually started writing a paper to subit to Scientific America but forgot about it plus i needed didn't know what the ratio of the surface area to  volume of sphere was.

me is bored. sucks having no life huh?

AYB has less of a life.  He doesn't even have a job where he can oogle over pretty wimmen. :)

How about looking deep within yourself and answering the question once and for all, "Yes.  Windows is much better than any MacOS"

hee hee hee...a quick search gave me this:

volume of sphere = (4/3) pi r^3

surface area of sphere = 4 pi r^2

now a search to explain why this is so and me has to bust out calculus to explain it... i'd rather do a search...

i shall bore you all with my dull ramblings...

Muahahahahaha!!!!!

yeah but debating the value of a platform is inane. I'll do it to humor my self other wise i think its a HUGE FUCKING WASTE OF TIME!!!!

at college my friends and i actually used formulas to describe women. A girl would pass by and we'd say to each other, 'hey you checked out that z=tanx*y^3/tantheta' or some bullshit. I forget the forumlas. We had one for the breasts, we had some for legs and some for the curves of the body. We knew the ratios too that would dictate the size, so we'd use that to describe to the size too and not just the shape. It was teh very ammusing because NO one would know what the hell we were going on about which meant we could be really perverted in public. Unless of course our calc professor would pass by, which he did once and his reply was: "i can't believe you guys." Keep in mind this calc professor was still quite young and had an affair with a college student and almost got married to her! He had an eye for hot college girls too and could get them because he was quite the good looking teacher. I can't remember a time when teh girls were not drooling over him!

Boy do i miss my college days! i miss my friends too.

Read up on Artificial Life.  Mind-boggling stuff.

Here's a link:

artifical life is indeed interesting. For me its more a philosophical question though, i.e. the ethics of artifical life because in effect we are going to end up using AI for 'slave labour'. Does intelligence, 'natural' or artifical lead to concious awareness and if it does then what of the rights? To often we take a homocentric view on these matters.

I attempted to study AI for programming purposes but most of the stuff went over my head.

thanks for the link by the way.

perhaps OW needs to update his OGL skillz?
OscarWilde

Wed Feb 20 04:59:36 2002

i actually want to use OGL to create a virtual simulation of the universe in some small part. Just more of a cool visual thing though and not for any real purpose.
THen i thought whats the point and decided to jus play with opengl just because its fun to code (when i'm in the mood that is).

My idea of a challenge:

Trying to make my classes exciting.
Trying to understand ASP and Java.
Trying to be a better human being.
Trying to be less....abrasive.

The slope of the two triangles aren't the same.
OscarWilde

Thu Feb 21 02:27:11 2002

AYB, ummm the slopes are the same.
1) right angle triangle
2) same height, width and hypothenuse (well the long side of teh triangle!) hence the ratio's are equal too.

as to HOW CAN THIS BE TRUE!!!!???

well let me see if i can word it right:
1) Its just a matter of how the use triangle pieces dictate the use of the square'ish blocks underneath.
2) the surface area of the blocks and its combination don't have the same surface area.
3) the sum of the parts in the first triangle should equal to the area of the triangle
4) but in the second the sum of the parts is less then the area of the  triangle.

simpler: seperate surface area + total surface area = a whole lot of illusions...

or something like that????

huh?

damn it I tried to do be ultra sneaky by going to the source of the picture! however it took me to some dumb childish site!

where do you find this stuff? and why is steve such a damn pupular name?

Nope. :)

One triangle = 2 / 5

Other triangle = 3 / 8

2/5=.4 != 3/8=.375

Poopy.

OscarWilde

Thu Feb 21 04:40:09 2002

oh!!!! I thought you meant the two triangles as in the two BIG triangles, not the two smaller triangles within the big one.

But the slope is similar enough and i don't think that answers the question. I could be mistaken because there might a relationship with the slight difference in the slopes to the 'missing' cube in the second big triangle.

none the less the great poopy head is never wrong! never!!!!

muahahahahahaha!!!!

Hey, Erastothenes!  You've got a leak!

Who is that dood? I did a search on the internet and found out he's like some greek guy that measured the circumsicion of teh earth by walking from two cities and viola after some pizza and a few beers he came to that answer. Plus he made some sieve to dish out prime numbers because prime numbers are tastier then mozzeralla cheese!

beyond that what does this guy have to do with triangles? Me thought that was pythagoras or some such name?

eh?

me in very silly mood.

OscarWilde

Thu Feb 21 07:20:57 2002

okay i realise now, ayb is right! the difference between the ratio is enough to account for the oddity in the second diagram. Me realises that me was taking the slope to be consistent in the big triangle when the slope is not consistent. Thus its not really a true triangle because its IN FACT IT HAS FOUR CORNERS!!!! IN TOTAL; THUS, THE THING WE SEE AS A TRIANGLE  IS NOT A TRIANGLE AT ALL!!!

phew!!! now that we solved that murder mystery lets find our next victim!!!

DuffMan

Thu Feb 21 09:23:51 2002

I found it in annother forum. If you tryed to solve it by looking at the url I thought the biggest hint would be the fact that it was called "LurigaTrianglar.gif" Why wouldn't they call it the Luriga Triangle? Because it's not really a triangle, hense "triangular". Being a litterary guy, I figured OW would have solved it that way.

AYB is to smart though and ruined it. :(
