The OSY Navy!
I find the idea of "awarding" rank increases to be silly and a waste of time and emotional energy, so I've set it up to be completely automatic.
Here are the settings as they stand now (subject to change)
1-49 posts: Ensign (1 stripe)
50-499 posts: Lieutenant (2 stripes)
500-999 posts: Commander (3 stripes)
1000-4999 posts: Captain (4 stripes! WHAT YOU SAY!!)
over 5000 posts: Admiral (a big stripe)
Me: 1st Lord High Grand Poobah of the Fleet (a big stripe plus lots of little stripes to stroke my ego)
To be extra silly, the ranking stripes are encased in an Aqua-inspired gelcap. I expect to hear from Apple's lawyers soon, at which point I will refer them to the U.S. Military. ;)

Canada doesn't have much of a navy anymore. When my dad was serving we had an aircraft carrier and a sizeable surface fleet, but everything got really old and replacements got really really expensive, and besides, we control the United States now anyway, so we can just use theirs! :)

Thanks, but I just lifted it from another web site (I give full credit to where it came from, though, right there on the page!)
I still have to go and fix a few minor errors in it though. And maybe add some stuff of my own. Embrace and extend, ya know? ;)

Anyone think we should change the post # scales?
Currently it's 1-49 as Ensign, 50-499 as Lieutenant, 500-999 as Captain, 1000-4999 as Commander, and 5000 plus as Admiral.
But that's a 50 post jump to first promotion, 450 to next, and 500 to next, and 4000 to the next. It doesn't seem exponential enough.
Shouldn't it be like, 50 for first promotion, 100 for the next, 200 for the next, etc? No, that will mean too many Admirals.
How about: 50, 350, 1000, 5000? That's close to the original scheme but would graph better. Hmm...
