Sorry about the Web Server Outage

Omniweb decided that it would just suddenly "expire" today, forcing me to download a new version.  I suppose if I'd gone with Apache I wouldn't have had these problems, but there you go.  Anyway, everything's back up to normal.

Why not IIS? Do a decent job with the patches and it's fine.

Doesn't IIS cost money and isn't Apcahe free?

Serious question by the way.

IIS comes with Win2K (all versions) but you're really not supposed to use it unless you have Win2K Server or up. Some people do anyway.

Apache, being GPL software, is free.

Of course, I could be talking out of my ass.

Hmmm, i must do a search on google....

It's something you have to enable. It comes disabled by default.

IIS is free on Win2k Pro, but limited to 10 users.  Even though OSY is pretty small, I don't want that limitation.

You may have to install the component in "Add/Remove Programs" (Windows Components) in the Control Panel.  After that, you just to go Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.

Apache, being GPL software, is free.

Not that anyone gives a damn but me, but I don't want this little misconception to spread. The Apache license is more similar to a BSD type license. Not that damnedable GPL.

That is all.

No, actually, thanks for the heads up, HitScan. I have no prob with the BSD license, but that damned GPL...

Serious question by the way.

I don't know why people still ask this.  </sigh>

Anyway, from the Win2K Pro help files (i.e. hit F1):
Internet Information Services 5.0 is not installed on Windows 2000 Professional by default. You can install IIS or select additional components by using the Add/Remove Programs application in Control Panel.

To install Internet Information Services

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and start the Add/Remove Programs application.
Select Add/Remove Windows Components and then follow the on-screen instructions to install, remove, or add components to IIS.

Anyway, this information was provided as a public service.  No warranties are expressed or implied. ;)

Self-aggrandizement: I noted earlier that I purchased a DVD-RW drive.  Today I received an *excellent* SVCD of Lord of the Rings, made from an early release tape.  My goal tonight/tomorrow is to make this into a DVD.  Any takers?
