Enter The Void

Hmmm.  We're ripping out our NetFinity cluster and replacing them with five little 1U pizza-box lovelys (where I get to sit in my big Spinny Chair and Application Center the fuck out of them at will), but we have about four cubic feet left in the rack that won't be filled up until about June.

Does anyone have any idea what to do with all this space? I'd build a little bed in there, but it's 19 degrees centigrade. Brrr.

Get some rack-mount Apple G4 servers, of course!!!!

Erm, wait....

Get an X-Box.

X-Boxes don't rack very well.

I'm thinking about a boxing glove on a spring though.

How about what are you doing with the old netfinity boxes? I'm a freak about old and/or interesting (and cheap!) hardware. My Netfinity 3500 mobo just got juiced up with a 9.1 GB HD and a copy of 2K server last night. It's no speed daemon, but I enjoi it muchly.

I kind of do to.  I'm looking for old Alpha and SGI stuff myself.

I do need to get a job first.

Oh, they're our .NET internal servers most probably.  They're getting on - Dual 800 Xeons with 1GB of RAM and 40GB HDD, but there's life in the old dogs yet.

It's just scaling out with the new puppies takes up so much less space, and we need to be able to slam five or six more machines at a weekend's notice without the hassle of buying a new rack.

I wish more companies made black computers.  I'd stuff Gateways in there (we're completely stateless and aiming at 60% of our projected peak capacity, so even if a couple explode we'll be fine) but they look so, well, so gauche.

Interesting you should mention G4s though.  We're hiring a couple of "OK Yahs" to do marketing and DTP and they both want Macintoshes. Probably so they can easily crash the fuckers and bray like horses down the phone at their shallow PR finishing-school friends, no doubt.

Paul: What's the chance of those guys getting Macs?

I hope you guys have standardized platforms.  It'd certainly be best (from my POV ;)) if they get new, fast machines with XP Pro installed.  Get 'em used to a real OS that has native software, dontcha know.

We're actually considering getting them Macintoshes, if that's what's going to help them get their "work" done, but we'll probably get them XP and paint the boxes blue, or something.

Make sure you give them a Northwood or a 2000XP and tell them they're really G5's.

Stick the computer under the desk, put an Apple monitor, keyboard, & mouse on the desk, and they won't notice the difference.  (Except for the fact that it doesn't crash on them every 10 minutes; but they might notice this after a while.  Oh, and the fact that it's fucking blazingly fast. ;))

Give it a nasty virus so it crashes every few hours.

if you don't, they'll figure something is up.

(snaps fingers)

I know!

I'll tell them Apple bought out Microsoft in 2000! and XP is the corporate version of OS X!

NEWSFLASH

We're getting the Macintosh for one of them.  The other doesn't really give a shit.

When all's said and done, it's just a computer.  (shrugs)

PaulHill

Wed Feb 6 23:16:36 2002

Can't.  It'll probably be a G4.  They make cool "Boiiinngg!!!" noises, which would normally be great.

But NOT on a computer costing two thousand pounds, damn it! For two grand I want a machine that, when being pushed down six flights of stairs (for example) makes alarming steel denty crunch tinkly banging noises, not something that sounds like an outtake from the Benny Hill show.

You see, this is one of the more alarming failings of the Mac platform. For a computer that costs an arm and both legs, it just doesn't have that "You're wallet is so fucked when I stop bouncing off stairwell walls" type of sound that an, oh, I dunno, a +100lb AS/400 does. Macs just make that kind of sproingy bouncy joke of a damaged computer sound that makes you want to chortle rather than grimace in pain. This needs to be rectified. Apple should include a couple of "oh shit bricks" inside the case. One, a large lead brick loosely attached to the side, and the other a box of sheet metal screws and thick 1.5" washers. This should liven things up a bit.
PaulHill

Wed Feb 6 23:45:35 2002

Oh, AS/400s make absolutely lovely "Better think of what outrageous lie to tell IBM" sounds down a stairwell.  They even leave a little trail of components behind, which is great.

Balance a LaserJet III on top of one and you're set!

HitScan

Thu Feb 7 00:26:05 2002

I can't imagine an AS/400 leaving a little trail of anything, due to the fact that they're designed much like a rather large sedan, only with no steering wheel.

I'm also convinced that the Laserjet III was merely an entry into the office stairwell crash olympics that got out of hand, because I've never seen one of the damn things print anything.
