Women find barriers to technology careers

...Many women lost inerest in the field (meaning CS related careers -AYB) largely because of the way men and women feel about technology and the way it is tought in colleges, said Alan Fisher, co-author of "Unlocking the Clubhouse: Women in Computing" (MIT Press).  The authors concluded a four year study of 100 Carnegie Melon students pursuing socmputer-science degrees to learn what they thought of the curriculum, method of teaching and differing choices of men and women.
The authors concluded that women wanted a broader picture of what the technology field is about,  Unlike males students whocared only about mastering technological skill, women wanted toknow how technology fit into the bigger picture and how it played a part in out lives.  the difference in attitude is what the authors call the "gender gap."
The main culprit is college technology curriculums, which are greatly in need of overhaul, Fisher said.
What does it mean?  First, colleges should rethink the way they teach technology so that it encompasses the learnng needs of both men and women.  Second, morst coporations should start overhauling thier culture and step into the 21st century.  They must get past pretentious flag-waving corporate speek such as "children-centric" and "gender-friendly" to achieve equality of the sexes.  In the meantime, it's a pity more women aren't pursuing careers in technology.

eh?

women wanted to know how technology fit into the bigger picture and how it played a part in out lives.

...the fuck? in a cs course?

Second, morst coporations should start overhauling thier culture and step into the 21st century.

yeah Pauli,

I get the feeling that the article is saying by "bigger picture" that women would rather be technology sociologists than actual programmers, engineers, or network techs;  That they'd rather not learn the nitty gritty skills that are nessesary in enterprise and concentrate on more academic and superficial content like how computer games make murderers and crap.

If they think CS isn't big picture enough, then I wonder how women supposedly feels about Tech school

Heh, I have a female CS professor, and that kind of crap annoys her to no end. She has no patience for women who don't want to get their hands dirty in the field. Amen, Dr. W!

This is truly bullshit. If I wanted to study how technology impacts our lives, I'd fucking study sociology.

Grow the fuck up and adapt you stupid bitches. The world doesn't need to hold your fucking hands. And the less it does the better.

I feel dirty.

I had to type it out by hand myself so typo's are the fault of Oscar Wilde (as AYB is perfect and no fault can be layed on him, plus I just felt like picking on my poopy-head  )

Heh! :)

It's a good thing that spelling skills are a prerequisite to being a smarty-pants schoolgirl like OW, and not a prerequisite to being the Emperor of the Universe to be Like AYB the Bringer of Typos.
