argh!!!! i'm downloading at a piddly 5 to 30 KB/s but that is sucktacular indeed.

i think my ISP has gotten more users then it can handle. But even this late at night no go. Other peeps are getting at least 50KB/second.

I've seen my line at 350KB/s before.

once you have the speed you get so used to it that when shit hits the fan and your connection is slow, its like pulling teeth with a rusted chain cutter

What should I go with, DSL or Cable for the same price, noting that I wish to run my own poopy-headed website from here?

For the cable set up here in Hong Kong they have a 10Mbps pipe for each apartment building. So who ever has cable in the building and is online, you divide the Total bandwidth by number of current online users to get what your bandwidth will be.
So in effect you could get 10Mbps or less then 56k during peak hours.

ADSL however is a different story. Each line is dedicated so we get max bandwidth as long as the ISP can handle the load.

This is just the deal in Hong Kong. I have no idea how the set up might be in your area. Though i'm pretty sure it must be a bitch to get wires into your van and not short circuit with the river so near by.

again supposedly the cable company told me that i could at max get 10Mbps upstream speed during non-peak hours :eek:

but i find that hard to believe, especially since the price is pretty cheap relatively speaking.

anyways.. i hear the rule is to get the ISP that has the closest switches to you.

beyond that, it beats me whats best for you in your area.
