New boxen!

I've been away for a few days (not that any of you would have noticed) because I built a new machine and stole some pieces from my old "main" computer.  And having 3 hours of Buffy on Tuesday didn't help. ;)

I am posting this from my brand new Athlon 1600+ (sic) XP-based computer that I built on Monday.  New ECS mobo, 256MB SDRAM (from P3 box), same old GF2 GTS video (plus ATi secondary), SCSI, 70GB total HD, CDR and CD, yada yada.

Ph34r m3, for I have passed teh gigahurtz mark!

Just thought I'd post something semi-informative.  To those in the US: have a happy T-day tomorrow.

New ECS mobo, 256MB SDRAM

Hmmm...ECS K7S5A?

An apparently decent board for ridiculously cheap.

As they say at OSY, indeed!

Various vendors had them between $62 and $70.  A number of their also had a positive quote from Tom's Hardware on them; it's the first time I've seen such a blurb from a website stuck on a mobo manufacturer's box.

Main reason I got it, though, was because the Epox I was originally looking at doesn't/didn't support the AthXP CPUs, and the other (more expensive) mobos just weren't being offered.  So I 'settled' for the ECS and thus far I'm pleased with it.  This one supports both SDRAM and DDR, and since I didn't have the $$$ on hand for DDR, I would have to use my SDR for the time being.

Even has built-in NIC and sound, though I'd have preferred to have neither.  I'm using the NIC for the time being and I've disabled the sound.  Been thinking about an Audigy or GTXP next...

Life at 1GHz+ does indeed kick much ass. Sadly, I don't think I'm going much past my curent 1.4 until AMD either drops that rating bullshit or has a chip that's really over 2GHz. I'm just picky like that.

And then you try dual processors...

Heh. Maybe after I have some extra cash. I still have 2 dual P2 boards that need some lovin.

My standards are so high for new boards now that I won't be able to buy a new one until I can afford the Tyan Thunder K7. This may take considerable time.

Got my copy of XP Pro delivered yesterday, installed it today.

w00t, as it were.

ClearType looks good even on my 3-year-old cheapo 19" Sceptre monitor.

This post has supposedly been informational.
