Games I am playing

Originally this topic was to be called "Civilization 2 Frustrations: or why I should never be left in charge of the world.  I grabbed a ripped copy of Civ 2 off morpheous the other day just to see if I would enjoy it (I loved Civ 1, I used to kick ass on King level with 7 civs but had a hard time on Emperor)  Anyway all my Civ 1 strategies don't work on Civ 2.  For example, I used to be able to roll over everyone with chariots early on, but they've been taken down from 4 attack to 3, which makes things difficult.  Also the AI always attacks my catapults when they are parked outside their cities.  How rude!  How am I supposed to capture them?  Anyway most of my games go down the shithole around AD 1300 or so, even at Prince level... :(  More practice I guess...

OK, so but what kept me up until 3:11 today you ask?  That would be Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Project 64, the kickass N64 emulator.  I downloaded a walkthrough but I kept feeling so empty inside whenever I used it to get out of a tricky spot, so I've decided, no more walkthroughs!  I spent the last few hours wandering around inside a friggin' huge whale, which was just really cool, and the little fishy girl inside was fun to play with (you get to pick her up and carry her around, and she makes cute noises)  Anyway.  It's a fun, fun, fun, fun, fun game.  I love it.

The other game I'm re-playing is Star Control 2.  I actually fired up my old P100 with Win98 to play this beast (it refuses to run with sound in Win2k or on a SB live, so I can't use my new machine)  This game has a plot more interesting than most science fiction novels, with amazingly cool and often comical aliens (nothing comical about the Kohr-Ah, though, they freak me out)  This game has it all, exploration, resource collecting, ship building/improvements, quests, space combat, a compelling RPG-style story that moves in real-time, and literally dozens of cool alien races.  If you haven't ever played it, you should.  Find it on an abandonware site somewhere.

The other game I was playing was Age of Empires II, but I'm kinda meh about it.  It looks cool but it's not as much fun singleplayer as Starcraft was.

So that's my gaming status right now.  What games are you guys playing?

I've been playing BGII,

but now I have Civilization III :)

Soon I shall have Neverwinter Nights.  And a second T-bird for the Machine that my poopy-head ph34rs!

Than I shall game away in bliss while posting "Indeed" like some brain-dead OSY'er.

And then I shall find a lovely woman to cuddle with while the whole world dies in a cespool of destruction!

Age of Empires is good. I'd love to see that in multiplay but I never liked civilization. Everything is so small and rarely graphically evident.

I'm a BGII whore. And to think that I was experimenting when I picked it up. While Icewind Dale is different(it's a good RPG), BGII has ruined RPG gaming for me....forever. It was flawless. You actually enjoy the plotline more than the fighting and actually start to think like a person in the game. You start to care about the characters, especially when romances start to kick in. They really did seem to think of everything.

Anthkatla is a HUGE city with hundreds of NPCs and rooms/buildings.

So many secrets and the cusomizability is absurd! Plus there are copious amounts of weapons, armor, eq, and different means of accomplishing each goal(although some are better than others). I guess it's a combination of the storyline, the interactivity with a wicked AI and a massive enveloping "feel" that has impressed me so much.

It really is an amazing game. RPG of the year. RPG, quite possibly, of all time. It certainly distills and captures the key, quintessential elements of great TSR roleplaying and delivers it as a total, enthralling, single-player experience.

AYB, I never used the character-modifier. I was so bummed when I thought I had failed at the game romance(before I romanced Viconia), that I couldn't be happier when everything turned out well with the NPC drow. I'm not using it. It may sound lame but it would sully a FLAWLESS gaming experience for me by adding that overwhelming cheat element.

I also bought Starcraft Battlechest on Tuesday. I used to play SC with a group of friends and a cool boss at the lab for HOURS on end....at night. We had a super-fast LAN and great machines(three years ago, we had great stuff: PII 500's with 128mb of RAM and an ATI Rage...)

We would team up sitting in different rooms within the lab, turn the lights down low and try to annihilate each other. I'm quite good, though I got rusty.

The computer Zerg rushed me on the first game(between the sixth and seventh SCV) and finished the game quick.

The second game went very differently. I held off the rush. Turtled beyond reason, spread while the computer attempted to repel some textbook attention-getting skirmish attacks and then I proceeded to crack his defensive carapace using a combination of Nuke/Yamato gun technology.

In the end...there can be only one!

Muahahahahaha. I don't like the expansion, though. The Terrans got screwed. The medic is weak and only maintains marines, which while versatile and effective in large numbers, really can't stand up to better options for other races. Plus, even if you have a 1/3 ratio for medics to marines, in a practical fight, the medics can't seem to get to the wounded in time. Poor implementation of a good idea.
The Valkyrie is ok but the lack of ground attack makes it a reverse Guardian and, therefore, less useful.

I like Blizzard. They sell their games as companies SHOULD. The CDs are both Mac AND Win. For someone like me, that's great.

I'm buying TOB soon. I miss Viconia. Growwwwwwl.

In summation:

Q3A: BEST FPS OF ALL TIME
STARCRAFT: BEST RTS OF ALL TIME
BGII: BEST RPG OF ALL TIME
VIPER: BEST RACER OF ALL TIME
