Unfortunately, I have a problem.
My machine is a Win 98, Compaq Box wi 128mb of RAM and a GeForce 2 card. The proc is an Intel PIII 833.
Yet despite this, I have problems wherein the game just....*stops*. It doesn't stutter or complain. One minute it will run and the next I can't even CTRL ALT DEL. I can't do *anything*. :(
What gives? I had it at first 800x699 with everything cranked up and I was stopping once every 15min.
Then, I reduced to 600x480 and now it's better. I also reduced from "best" machine to above avg...(even though my machine has 233mhz greater horsepower than the strongest machine in the listing).
Still, it crashes once in a half hour. I've looked at planetbaldursgate and the patch(which is big so if I download it, I have to be sure it's worth it) mentions NOTHING about such a problem.
My cache, set at 300mb, was default. I have graphics accel checked in one part but not in the graphics tab...simply in the general tab.
I just want the crashing to stop. :(
My second problem is that I *can't* seem to get out of the bad guy's place. I'm stuck in the library now(before I crashed).
I have it set on easy and I'm still having a reasonably rough time....any advice?
I'd appreciate it if you knew what's wrong. I figure you're a hardware guy and you might know if it's the game or a setting I have to keep a certain way.
Thanks.

The best thing I can recommend is to get the latest drivers for your system.
Then go to "configure" in the opening screen.
Click on the tab: 2d & 3d options and click on the button, "3d Setup" towards the middle of the screen.
This will download the latest OpenGL thingy. Then re-test.
For the game, in order to get out of The one guy's dungeon: you have to get the doors open to the center where the Aurauch is.
To do that you have to find a stone that will allow you to tell the second golem you see to "Clean the Cages" or something.
the stone in question is on a table in one of the rooms.
Just a suggestion, take Minsc along as he is the frickin funniest!
"Butt kicking, FOR GOODNESS!"
Jaheria is a good one to take too.

Is my cache ok? Should I set 3d acceleration if I have a GeForce 2 on the machine? In the graphics tab, I mean?
Where would I get the new Open GL drivers? Maybe I'll try and apply the new patch too. I just want the app to be stable.
Which drivers should I get? I'm thinking that the Compaq, which is 4 months old, probably has new drivers, no?
Thanks.

It can be found here.
I play it on Win2K, so I don't know what these "lockups" are that you talk about. ;)

That game is sprite based, and the only thing it used 3d affects for is lighting stuff.
I'd follow harbs advice and then try to download the latest from www.opengl.org

It's either a 933 or an 833.
I was being cautious. Maybe it's a 933?
I can't download the patch. I mean, I can but wiout ZIP or web connection, I can't get it into a machine.
How would I split the exe into parts in floppies?
AYB, I bought the BGII in the closest spot to home. They didn't have Mac. :(

If it's a P-III, it could be a 933, or an 866, or perhaps even a 733 if you're sure about the '33' part. And it's not a Celeron 833 because all Celerons at 800MHz and up use a 100MHz FSB and 33MHz does not generate a proper clock multiplier.
You have been informed.
Also, get more RAM, and a real OS. RAM is cheap, and Win98 is a gigantic pile of spooge.
You have been informed again.

Uhm...ok.
Like I said, I checked my system and it was a _33.
I thought it was 933 but that seemed high and I wasn't sure so the nagging doubt of 833 popped into my head.
If you want, I can get you the screenie....
Geez.

I have a P3-733 and Gf2. ISTR having some lockup problems early on (this was well over a year ago), but IIRC that was resolved with updated Geforce drivers. I started out using the manufacturer's drivers (Aopen) but later went with reference-driver Detonators because Aopen was extreeeeeemely slow (negligent, IMO) in updating their shipping drivers. I've been using the latest WHQL drivers from nvidia and haven't had ANY problems in BG2.
Of course, you're using a Compaq, so all bets are off. ;)
I'd still recommend installing the BG2 patch, and using the latest nvidia WHQL drivers.

Still, where do I get the WNGB..whatever drivers?

WHQL = Windows Hardware Quality Labs. Meaning, the drivers have been checked by MS to not cause crashes. Teh win.
Nvidia has their latest (Detonator XP v21.83) drivers here.
I've been adventurous and was getting 'leaked' nvidia drivers from The C-A-D but fortunately nvidia has released 21.83...

I turned 3d accel off and it seemed to stop. I played solid for about an hour.
I'm going to try and keep that and see if I don't need the new drivers.
The game is SWEET.
