I've not got my game on in months. :( Hell, I'd bet even some of my friends who don't play much could kick my ass in Q3. I used to 0wn so righteously in that game :( :( :(

That said, I also haven't bought anything in forever. The last game in my house was Max Payne, my brother's purchase. The game kicks ass, I just can't play it. (I can't play anything because I sit in front of a computer all day 5-6 days a week and I get so damned tired of it...)

Never heard of it. What type of game is this?

A kind of combo of BG and DiabloII.  It has a much more dynamic and original character advancement model.  Iyou you choose your character to use his sword, axe, or pointy-stick often, he naturally gets better with it as you use it more versus weapons or spells you hardly use.

IT sounds wonderfull and promises a lot of replayability and diversity of characters as opposed to canned kits in BG or DII

MEEEHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, but oneof the things that really appleals to me is the promise of being able to use the Lightsaber more effectively during the game.

Previous JediKnight games had you using the blaster much more, but now Lightsaber skill is going to be paramount in suceeding and will be more flexable and will allow you to damage the evironment with it (cut throught walls) and wield it much more skillfully.

I'll tell you how it is.

Yes, Civ3 will be occupying much of my time next month.

I recently picked up some 'bargain' titles just because I saw them:
- House of the Dead 2 (brand new, $20)
- Clive Barker's Undying (frikken $20 already!)
- the AD&D/TSR Silver Archives Collection ($9)

Oh, and a spare IEEE-1394 card.  $20.  ;)

I don't know Madan, I've never played half Life but it has been called "The Greatest" game of all time by more than one Game centered magazine and i don't think they called it that to spite the Macintosh and the fact that it isn't available for MacOS.

But BGII is great.  What mix of characters do you play with?  or do you just play with in-game NPC's?

Mon Oct 15 23:01:07 2001

AYB:
Half-Life is cool, but it's not Quake. Quake is more about "shoot-everything-that-moves", Half-Life is more mission oriented. Still, calling HL "The Greatest" is a real stretch.

Never tried BG. How does it compare to Diablo2? /* Favorably, I hope, D2 got tiresome after a while. */

??? Has nothing to do wi Mac.

I've beaten HL and, to be honest, the AI was overhyped.
The graphics are just.....lame. Compared to Kingpin, which also moved off of the Q2 engine, Halflife is positively fossilized. No complex painskins, not to mention many eye-candied features.

As far as QIIIA goes, it's like an arena o' gladiators. HL can't match that. HL can't match the QIII graphics or physics engine because, despite its modifications by the Valve team, even they admit: "it's a 5 year old engine". QIIIA is barely 2 years old.

Moreso, have you played UT for QIIIA?
Go to: www.urbanterror.net

Like I said, the ONLY thing HL has that QIIIA doesn't is CS. CS has only a couple of small things that Urban Terror doesn't to the QIIIA total conversion. One of them is objectives(the *biggest* missing piece) and it's on its way. QIIIA is easier to develop for on ALL fronts(which is why HL only has about a handful of models and even less skins on polycount, while QIIIA has THOUSANDS of each) and while CS has more servers, the number of CS servers has actually declined.

But BGII is great.  What mix of characters do you play with?  or do you just play with in-game NPC's?

Hey Duff, are the graphics as good as they look on the box?

My QIIIA graphics look *just* like the box.....

....

....

.....

When I played the game on my friend's new G4 733, wi half a gig of RAM and the GeForce3.

On my iMac, the res drops to 480x640 and the colors go down to "standard". :/

Still, T2 looks *great* on the box.

Only reason I didn't get it was I felt I'd regret buying another FPS. Especially since my connection is still stuck at 21baud. I already *deeply* regret buying Diablo and Ceasar III.

Two very hard and very disappointing games.

Go to: http://www.urbanterror.net

The most advanced 3d person shooter i've played for any length of time (meaning outside demo's at retail stores) is Quake II.

I don't get into shooters very much and I think the genre often is overhyped for it's emphasis on graphics to the detriment of gameplay and satisfaction gotten by accomplishing sophisticated goals.

I like RPG's, Resource management, and Flight Sims myself.

Riso: not yet, I'm waiting for an opportunity to leave the house.

Quake 3 is a lovely engine.  Yes.  We know.  Nice pretty pictures on my screen.  Blah blah blah.

This doesn't alter that Half Life is about a million times more fun to play.  I couldn't care less how pretty Quake 3 is, because I would rather play HL (or SoF), which, despite being Q2-class visually, are actually worth playing.  They don't bore me rigid.  Q3 is a fine example of style over substance.

I dunno, never tried it.  I'd think it would be a bit of a chore as an online game myself.

When I play it, I have it auto pause at the end of every combat round or when a trap is spotted.  That could get a little annoying for some.

But perhaps if you were only playing one character each online, it might be interesting.

OK, you can start off with more than one character my playing "Multiplayer" instead of single.  Multiplayer is the same otherwise.  I'd start over MP style after you get the hang of it.

You can also import your character that you are currently working on if you wish into the new multi game.

I'm starting over yet again and seeing if I can get through to the waukeen promenade without sleeping. No small feat if you note that you start out with no spells and therefore healing in the beginning.

Many hours, single-player.  The so-called single-player mode was a complete waste of time.  That's the primary purpose I have for a game.  Q3A failed miserably.

Madan, you criticize Q2's physics and HL's appearance, but you miss the point so spectacularly in so doing it's enough to make a grown man cry.

I don't care how pretty something is if I get no pleasure from playing it.
I don't care how "realistic" (like it matters in such a game) something is if I get no pleasure from playing it.

It got real old, real fast.

Deathmatch style gaming is fun for a time, but I can't tolerate it for longer than an hour or two.  HL single-player I can play for hours non-stop, similarly SoF.  There's a point to playing them, and a feeling of progression as I play.  Deathmatch, well, I play for an hour, and aside from a couple hundred frags, I'm back where I started... what's the point?

Good to see another Arena gladiator, HitScan. Have you kept in practice? I love fresh meat. :)

Meat indeed. I have become docile and w34k. A 26.4 connection isn't exactly condusive to a positive online gaming experience. In my heyday I would choose random servers at distant colleges and school them so hard that they left in disgust. That was on a college network, Purdue kicked so much ass.

One time I joined a game late, and the current asskicker thought it would be funny to "call the last kill" it was me. So, after I typed my jesting reply he offed me from behind with the rail. I was not amused. After the next round began, I clued him in on what ph34r is all about. He only lasted half the round, heh.

Anyway, that story only makes me more sad these days, as I don't even have Q3 installed anymore. (I figure I should wait until ATI makes some decent XP drivers, what do you think? ;) ) Maybe if I ever feel the love of a DSL or better connection, HitScan shall return, but sadly, no sooner :(

Many hours, single-player.  The so-called single-player mode was a complete waste of time.  That's the primary purpose I have for a game.  Q3A failed miserably.

So you played Q3ATA? No?

Have you played the FOUR, full-fledged, supported total-conversions for single-player mayhem? No?

Have you at least played one of the FORTY(that's 37 more than HL) mods that allow for team play on both online and single matches? No?

Yes, then the game WOULD be a terrible waste of time for you.

Madan, you criticize Q2's physics and HL's appearance, but you miss the point so spectacularly in so doing it's enough to make a grown man cry.

No, I believe you decided to install your own "point" into my comment.

My contention wasn't that Q3A is better than HL because the graphics were better but that:

Q3A is better than HL because it's graphics are better because the graphics are better, with all other things being equal.

Guess what? All things ARE equal. If you refuse to dl the new patches, mods, maps, models, skinz, total conversions and buy updates for Q3A, that's your problem but there *simpy isn't* any feature(except objectives...which are almost done) that HL has that Q3A doesn't.

Quite simply, Q3A can do *anything* HL can do and it's go the very same self-admitted "oooo ahhhh" candified graphics and physics that spank Q2's.

I don't care how pretty something is if I get no pleasure from playing it.
I don't care how "realistic" (like it matters in such a game) something is if I get no pleasure from playing it.

It got real old, real fast.

So must UT, CS and all other FPS then. Because Arena has mods and TCs that duplicate HL to a frightening degree.

Only the graphics and physics don't perform at an age of 5 yrs.

Deathmatch style gaming is fun for a time, but I can't tolerate it for longer than an hour or two.

Q3A isn't only straight DM.

HL single-player I can play for hours non-stop, similarly SoF.  There's a point to playing them, and a feeling of progression as I play.  Deathmatch, well, I play for an hour, and aside from a couple hundred frags, I'm back where I started... what's the point?

More like where's the point because you totally missed it. The fact is you don't try the TCs or mods and then proclaim that Q3A is just candified crap.

You really aren't part of the Q3A community, and whether you want to be or not, you really aren't aware of the cool stuff for Quake.

Too bad you're talking out of your Arse.

HL to date has:
23 released models.
63 released skinz.
1 released total conversion.
3 released mods.

UT to date has:
45 released models.
112 released skinz.
2 released total conversion.
12 released mods.

Arena to date has:
212 released models.
1046 released skinz.
4 released total conversion.
Q3TA
42 released mods.

That accounts for hundreds more hour of solo-play...including non-DM solo play.

Get informed.

What about those that aren't "featured"?

Oh, here they are:

Navy Seals Covert Ops: www.planetquake.com/nsq3

Or Urban Terror:

www.urbanterror.net

Bazooka Quake v1.0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New guns.  New effects.  Incredible gameplay.

Pandemonium v1.0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not enough powerups to go around in a standard deathmatch?  That's because you haven't played Anarchy yet!

Soul Survivor v0.9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may start with only 5 lives, but you can claim the souls of your victims to receive more...

Q3Score v0.8b

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever won by 125,000 points and gotten first on the server's high score list?  You will now.  It's the same great Quake with a new arcade flavor.  Come get some.

Escalation v0.9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your stake is up to 32 frags, you're standing at 60 below the fraglimit, and you just grabbed the Quad.  Health is down to 50, but that's ok.  You're a god.  Nothing can stop you.  You go for that one last frag, praying you can stay alive...

Buy a BFG v0.9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three frags buys you a BFG... so you'd better make every shot count.

Gee, another 8!

Wait, here's more:

The Dark Conjunction. Total SINGLE player conversion.

GITS- Ghost in the Shell. Total SINGLE player conversion

Beastwars

Kingpin Arena

Unreal Arena

Mean Arena

Eternal Arena

Jailbreak

Oh, wait...that's 8 more.

And look:

Serial Killers.

Or...

TaC Mod....

Gee, that's WELL OVER 60 mods and TCs.....

60+, Arena and Team Arena vs 13, CS, HL

Gee, which has more material. I wonder.... Hmmmmm.

M.

And, no, AYB, neither has Boo. :)
(AYB's way of telling me to calm down)

I finished the prologue, entered the center of the city, defeated the dark circus, lost Imoen and gained an Elf mage betty.

Now, I move to the Copper Coronet. Sweet.

How much of the game is left over AYB? A lot? I hope so.....

Sweeeet.

CS isn't a "mod" or a TC

What is it then?

The Opera: http://opera.redeemedsoft.com/index.htm
S+I: http://www.planethalflife.com/si/

Some links can be found here:

Too bad Halflife.net closed.

I however found some pages listing mods nonetheless.

Notice the 115 files under modifications on fileplanet:

CS isn't a "mod" or a TC.

This leaves me something like confused. It's most certainly a TC, at least any versions after it went retail are. They just slapped a TC on a disk, along with the barest minimum of HL Engine parts to make it work. What are you talking about "isn't a mod or TC?"

It's still boring as hell though, mod or TC, heh.

Yeah, after beta5.2 it went downhill. (so I heard)

From experience (that means Beta 7 onward) every new version sucked more.

I hope you're proud of yourself.
You nearly made me install HL again.

First of all, it IS a TC but not one I consider a TC that you obtain. It comes in the box. Therefore, it isn't something you're getting afterwards. Not like UT or NS.

Still, compared to Arena, HL has ONE mod for every 4 Arena has. Check Fileplanet.

ANYTHING HL can do....Arena can do.

And it can do it *better* because it's graphics and physics are better.

Mad, CS was downloadable before it was sold seperatly.

And you can /STILL/ download it for free.

ANYTHING HL can do....Arena can do

Except having (great) singleplayer out of the box and running on a P233+V2 with more than 20 FPS.

Check Fileplanet

I did. And surprise! More stuff available for HL than for Q3.
I don't know how you counted, but HL has more mods and TCs.

DrPizza

That's a real gem there.

You're saying I have to download -- or even *buy* -- some add-on to make Q3A worth having?

Fuckin' A.

Games to buy:

Halo
Project Gotham Racing
DOA 3
NHL Hitz

And this "motor cross rally" game I just saw demo'd for the Xbox today - "Oh MY GOD" I need that....

Of course, what would have been THE COOLEST mod of all, for QIIIA no less, will never be released in its original form because of goddamn scumsucking lawyers.
