Hello folks,

I am going to attempt to move OSY to a new server today. I am finally getting rid of the Lego server and transferring to a slightly-less-ancient P4 server sitting under my desk.

I will be running the backup for the OSY forum database later this afternoon. This means that any messages you post between that time and the time I get the server running on the new machine will be, sadly, lost forever. The management apologizes for the inconvenience.

The good news is that the P4 server is significantly faster, so you should hopefully notice better response times for OSY. I already copied my blog over to it and it is faster serving that.

This is all running on the new server now. My blog still has a minor issue with images, but I should be able to fix that.

Fixed the images--it was the whole port 8080 thing.

Please let me know if you notice any problems with OSY, like staying logged in, or anything.

Also please tell me you notice the improved speed!

Also I just activated lewis' account, as he changed his account details.

Annoyingly, I am finding that I cannot enable clean URLs on my blog. Everything I do fails.

This is necessary in order to get iTunes to work with Knotty Geeks.

Maybe I need some dinner first.

Finally got clean URLs working, after hours (!!) of fiddling.

Turns out there was some sort of bug in the URL itself for clean-urls, that caused it to be a missing page. I had configured everything correctly in Apache, installed mod_rewrite, did all the stupid AllowOverrides in httpd.conf, edited the .htaccess file, but I couldn't turn the bloody feature on!

Forcing it on in the Drupal config file worked. Every URL on the site, including all the admin urls, work perfectly, except... the URL to turn on clean URLs.

I'm thinking of upgrading to Drupal 6, although I'm a bit worried everything will break. Mind you, I could just restore from backup even if it did, so maybe this is a good time.

But *nix is easy and fun to use!

Unix is neither fun nor easy to use.

It is, however, quite powerful and flexible, in its own inimitable way.

I prefer it on the server, where once you set stuff up right you don't have to really ever touch it again.

Today I am going to try and prepare Drupal for upgrading to version 6. Drupal seems to be on the path of another open-source system (PHPBB) in that it is slowly getting less, er, angry in its implementation. But we'll see how the upgrade goes.

Upgrading to Drupal 6 was rather bumpy, because I didn't read the instructions properly (I thought I was on a standard theme, but I wasn't, so I got errors and an ugly CSS-less site in the end). But I fixed that pretty quickly. The new Zen theme for Drupal 6 is hideous, so I need to change that, and re-download and install all my old modules for things like Audio, etc.

Still, I'm reasonably satisfied.

Consider this thread (and the new servar) now smammed.

I'll happily trade having to check up from time to time for not getting ulcers setting it up in the first place.

Further, I propose we discuss what happens if smam was introduced to other intelligent species such as chimps, dolphins, and camels.* Would they become as silly as us?





* We all know camels are the greatest mathematicians in the multiverse.

I shudder to think what dolphin smam might be like...

Well, dolphins are the only animals I've ever read about that will come up with games to play with even if they're alone (sea world, etc), so I bet they could get down in a quite smamular way indeed.

Just a little trouble with the language and culture barriers, but those trainers with iPads are probably doing their best to come up with the first cross-species awkward hitting-on.
