Seriously, anyone done any major life changes?

I myself, got a new job, moved, house, etc. At the grand age of 38, I finally feel like i'm all growed up.

Moved out to an acreage just over a year ago, love being out of town, but I still have decent broadband internets.

Bought a boat a few summers ago, then upgraded it last summer.

Now running in a senior executive position within my company, which is nice and all, but the worst part about it is having staff.

So, things are fine, but I'm working a bit too much these days. I need to fix that somehow.

Oh you poor bastard. I just spent 3 years being a Service Manager at a relatively large marine dealership. And, well, it has given me an uncontrollable hatred towards boats. As one of my more affluent customers used to tell me "Son, a boat is nothing but a hole in the water that you throw money into" and ... I think I agree with him. I'm jealous about living in the country, I could only afford a place in town, but mayhaps one day I can get a place out of town (with high speed, which I gots to have ). Then again, if I feel the need for corn & cattle, 5 minutes gets me there.

AYB: A herd of cats? Are they hard to milk? I know if I tried to milk my calico she'd be all into for about 3 minutes, then she'd probably tear off some genitalia. I try to avoid that.

My first boat was a 1988 VIP Valiant with a 190HP 4.3L OMC (Chev) engine and Cobra leg. My first outing with it I hit a rock and wrecked the skeg and bent the prop shaft (in my defense I was doing nothing newbish - it was a freak occurance in what should have been a safe part of the lake - scared the living shit out of me too). The prop shaft damage was something I didn't realize until the following season. That was defnitely a money sink and I had to pour some cash into that to get it fixed up. Spent most of the summer waiting for parts because my boat mechanic was incompetent (primary reason), and it's hard to get OMC parts (secondary reason). The mechanic kept ordering the wrong ones, causing extra delay.

When I finally got the boat back, we used it for a week straight, then sold the fucking thing. Also sold my camper, then bought a 1998 Moomba Outback tournament boat with a 350HP Indmar Chevy V8 that I'd had my eye on. That was towards the end of August, and we used it nearly every day until October (this is last fall). I love that boat. It's in my garage at the moment, I'm doing a bit of work on it to get it ready for next season. It's the first boat me and my wife have ever wake boarded behind (i.e. finally figured out how). My uncle tried to drag me behind his Ski Nautique a bunch of times, but I never got the hang of it. I can kneeboard behind anything though.

I've actually got pics posted in another thread, probably on page 2 or 3 now. But I don't mind posting more.

He's not as much of a lunatic as APK, nor does he seem to be quite as much of a loser (he doesn't look like a serial murder/rapist (in that order, the SICK FUCK), unlike APK) as he has a job (well, not any more) and apparently a spouse, and his software does sort of more or less kind of work.

But he's still a fucking loon.

Same shit different decade. Writing code and trying to make a difference with it. Some days that strategy works better than others. I'm still married and coming up on a 6 year anniversary in April. Life is pretty good all in all.

Working at Panasonic HQ in memory procurement for the past 3 years or so. Really busy right now,
what with the semiconductor biz being what it is, and with the Sanyo takeover. Plus, my kids are growing up; the oldest is almost 10, and the youngest (3) is going into kindergarten next month.

Not much time to read (or post) at OSY or Ars........ I guess I can lurk/read more than I can post at the moment.

So I did the obvious: steal my neighbours wifi.

Turns out wireless Thomson Speedtouch adsl modems have default passwords based on the default SSID(!) you can calculate with a tool.
Said tool has been out since 2005.

Nothing on the job front. Perhaps I ought to get one these days.

After university I accidentally fell into a job in indie film visual effects. I have my own STARmeter on IMDB and everything.

During all that I was living in a warehouse I semi-converted with a bunch of friends... before and after. We generally caused all kinds of trouble, I went out with a stripper for a bit, good times were had.

Currently I'm nursing an achilles tendon injury and a broken tooth and doing not much! I quit my job before Christmas after our tiny team got taken over by a great big company.

I remember JR saying he'd wasted his youth by not wasting it... I'm planning to waste everything as fast as possible

Computing wise, it's mostly just a Toshiba convertible tablet I run Slackware on. I booted Vista a few times but it made me angry. I'm losing touch Whenever I need to write something it's shell script I turn to first, and I have no idea how to set up NetworkManager or the whole hotplug thing. My Wacom tablet doesn't work after suspend/resume and I straight-up can't be assed to work out why! My Octane kernel panics if the fibrechannel is connected at boot time and I just don't care! I also have no comprehension of AJAX, Prototype, JSON, Rails, virtualisation, any of that. I'm staggered that HTML is now something you write entire applications in, but somehow I run Opera full screen and sit in it 99% of the time so I suppose it works!
