grr... me want more posty.

My self-imposed 5999-post temporary exile from the BF is driving me nuts.  How am I supposed to fill the hours at work now?

Not that there are any good threads in the BF anyway... :(

Lindows at Walmart.

That says it all.

Let the fucking rednecks try to use Linux/GNU.

I don't care as all it does is take more people out of the online commuity that are wasting my bandwidth.

I'd really like to see what the results are, sales-wise, tech-support-call-wise, etc, of these Lindows PCs.  Because only a few months ago people were reviewing beta copies of Lindows and pronouncing it utterly sucktacular-- even Linux zealots!  So unless it's suddenly and magically gotten a LOT better, these people are going to be pretty pissed when they find that none of their Deer Hunter games work.

Either way, Loonix is going to suffer from this.

Scenario #1:
People buy into the hype, grab Lindows at Wally World, and then are utterly disgusted by it when it won't run most of their software. People quickly get the idea and spread the word. This should set popular opinion nicely against Loonix.

Scenario #2:
Wally World employees, knowing just enough to realize that customers will be upset and disappointed when Lindows won't run their stuff, voluntarily steer people away from it. People quickly get the idea and spread the word. This should set popular opinion nicely against Loonix.

So, if this succeeds, Loonix takes a hit. If it fails, Loonix takes a hit. Sounds good to me. :D

Hate to say this, but I agree with some of the higher-modded comments on Slashdot.  Why do you brand typical Walmart customers as ignorant rednecks and not simply those taking advantage of economies of scale?  The latter is probably more common than some of you admit.

Lindows most likely blows goats, but give the consumer some credit and allow that he might know what makes an OS suck.

To paraphrase an elderly friend, going to Walmart makes me feel thin, smart, and rich.  Still, I haven't noticed that the clientele is that much different from Target or Kmart, or, for that matter, Fry's or Rat Shack, and, as little as many of the shoppers at the latter establishments might know about electronics or software, I'm fairly sure they A) know if they aren't getting Windows and B) if they  happen to be aware of Linux at all, know that Lindows ain't the same thing.  But I could be wrong.

Well in my area, Target is seen as "upscale" compared to *mart; the Walmart people tend to be lower-income people, and Kmart denizens go to the other two because they don't know when their Big K will be closing.  Plus, the closest K has turned into a real dump inside -- probably falling personnel morale, but it doesn't provide a decent shopping environment.  (Though it is better than the Ames I was in recently. <shudder>)

Not to be racist or anything, just pointing out a fact about the Wally Mart near my old place.

Everyone buying stuff inside was under 20, had at least 1 kid, wore gold, had stuff like Honda's and Toyota's with big exhaust pipes, 2" from the ground with 12' fins, Japanese writing all over them and tinted windows, not to mention a predominance of BMW 5 and 7 series all "riced" out. Hell I KNOW they don't have any jobs because I see the same cars at the unemployment office that the local DMV was near... It must be great to not have to speak a word of English, get knocked up by your boyfriend at 16 and live off of welfare whom pays for your Chapter 8 housing and your 70K car. The Cambodians in Mass have it made.

Harbinger

Mon Jun 17 14:09:19 2002

EM, in my locale, we see the exact same riced-out stuff except that the vast majority is white/trailer trash.  I just gotta laugh when a car passes by that has a spolier taller than the roofline.

<rhetorical>
And why, exactly, would you want your car's exhaust system to sound like a riding lawn mower?
</rhetorical>

Evil Merlin

Mon Jun 17 15:41:18 2002

I dunno about people who do that to cars that cost so little. Why the hell are you going to put $10K into a 10K car?
Magus

Me, I just don't understand why ricers think all that crap is any sort of improvement.

It makes me think of the trend in US cars of the mid-1970s.  When emission controls took effect and performance took a nose dive, auto manufacturers made up for it by adding "racing stripes/decals" to their previously-sporty vehicles.  Blech.

At least racing stripes don't make your 4-cylinder car sound like a Yamaha dirt track motorcycle.

What you don't think having tyres 1/4 thick, on Mags that cost $1000 a pop that your hard working tax dollars paid for is a good thing?
Magus

Evil Merlin

Mon Jun 17 17:01:01 2002

Nah I didn't think so.

Kinda like the 16 kid you see working at Shaws sweeping the floor really makes the payments on the BMW 5 series you see him driving in, can you say DRUGS? and WELFARE cash?

Magus

Mon Jun 17 17:04:55 2002

Drugs and welfare cash. Yup, I can say it. :p :D

When I worked in a Wally World, it always disgusted me to see welfare queens (with a dozen kids all about the same age) pull out food stamps and proceed to buy steak, while I was working my ass off and eating hamburger.

One oddity I've seen increasingly is ricing a small pickup truck.  Low profile tires and compressed (?) shocks, leaving it about 2 inches off the ground.

I mean, what good is having a pickup if you can't haul anything?!?  Any item you plop into the bed will cause the truck to scrape asphault as soon as you put it in gear.  [Yeah, I know it's for looks only, but still... ]

I'm waiting for some moron to do the same treatment to a Hummer.

It's true, the BF is totally being taken over by the trolls.  MWNH is one of the biggest trollers known to mankind, that's the real sad thing.  The BF started to go downhill once he took over moderation duties.

And I think it stinks that he can move, delete and lock threads, whereas PeterB can only lock them.  What kind of equitable moderation is that??
