Fade Out

Isn't it odd that back in the 80's and 90's, you used to tell how old and crap your system was by how jerky the graphics got?

Nowadays, PCs and consoles don't jerk to a standstill, the clipping plane slowly advances with each new game release like some encroaching fog of graphics death.

Brr.

I feel this is relevent. Have you ever seen screens of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintendo N64? Absolutely ass. The detail isn't too bad, but apparently, our Dinsoaur Hunter can't see more than an arms length in front of him. Pitiful.

However, a humorous point can be made from your observation. "Coming soon from whozitsoft: REality! The game so realistic and lifelike and so overly detailed that we have to fog out the entire screen!" This of course, leaving you with little to do but listen to the creatuers in said game kill you off over and over again. It'll make a mint. :D

I found the fog in ICO (on the PS2) to be particularly brutal, because it was totally inconsistent.

Sometimes, if you were supposed to, you could see for miles in an outdoor setting.

Other times, you were INDOORS, and it wasn't supposed to be foggy at all, yet you couldn't see the far wall ten feet away.

Fog sucks.

If done right, fog is ok. Too bad it's rarely done right...
