Not that he bothered to get out of the way, I'd expect.  Squirrels, for instance, have this uncanny sense to not run across the road UNTIL your vehicle approaches... and if the get smart enough to decide to turn back, the usually do it when they're right in front of your vehicle, after having crossed from the OTHER side of the road.

It's no wonder they're so low on the food chain.
