You know what really pisses me off?

The fact that companies are actually SCARED of my resume and my experience. They THINK that they can get by with some just out of college kid with no practical experience (note: this differs quite a bit from a college kid with a few years experience), and they don't understand why I am worth a lot more than $50K a year... their loss.

I can understand how you would be annoyed, EM.

A family friend was a l33t IBM engineer.

I say "was" because he's no longer employed there...after twentyfive years of service.

Guy knew a bit. Quite like you, actually. Very pretty resume, btw.

Anyways, he was making over a hundred gees, over forty in the age and, one day a couple months back, surprise, it's too expensive to keep him, so they hire two high school grad assclowns to replace him.

He thinks he's ok. I mean, he's forgotten more than I know but, as you can imagine, his resume screams to prospective employers: "I'm more than you can handle...pay me what I'm worth!".

And noone would.

How is this different from Monster.com?

Well, (1) on Monster you can have it hidden and only listed when someone wants to contact you; and (2) when you're involved with stuff like the Battlefront where people can gain "enemies" then you (well, certainly me at least) don't want someone finding your 'real' email/mail addy/phone and doing nefarious shit with it.

Just posting your personal info on Monster isn't generally a problem, because people generally aren't looking there for names to add to spam lists, or to add your name to the White Power mailing list.  But if you post a message on (for example) BF and link to your resume which contains your personal info, then you're opening yourself to potential problems from people with more computer power than brain power.

But fine, I deleted it. Last thing I need for someone to be sending me emails again.

And it seems like you already have reason to keep some private info, well, private.

You hit the nail right on the head Madan.

In today's world, companies want to get by as cheaply as possible... they really don't put any thinking into the overall ramifications of the future.

All it takes is one Noob mistake and an email system can be borked for good...

I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that in the next few years a lot of these companies are going to look at the books and figure that they could save money from less downtime, etc, by hiring better people.

This is what I'm hoping, anyway.  In the meantime, I get to learn on the job all the time, which is cool.  Today I'm learning how to use InDesign.  I almost lost my cookies when I created a graphic in Illustrator, saved it IN ILLUSTRATOR FORMAT, imported it to InDesign.. and it TOTALLY FUCKED IT UP!  This is Adobe's fucking vector graphic format, and it can't handle it???

I saved it as a WMF, and it worked fine.  Adobe is on crack, I am convinced.

Madan

Tue Jun 4 20:34:46 2002

What format did you save it in? EPS or AI?

M.

Jeremy Reimer

Tue Jun 4 22:00:21 2002

I saved it in AI format.  I tried resaving in EPS format, Illustrator 8 compatibility mode, and that seemed to work better.  The WMF version looked fine on screen but was subtly fucked up when printed.

So much for the vaunted Adobe app integration!

However, I still like InDesign better than Pagemaker.  I haven't used Quark so I can't comment on it, but InDesign is pretty neat.

EDIT: Oh, and Madan, welcome back.  I've missed you here.

Had you not posted that disclaimer, I'd have had to be annoyed. :)

Speaking as a recent grad, it's hard for me to find work too. With all the layoffs in my area, companies are able to get the experienced guy for the same that I'd get. This makes it difficult on me, I fear. If anyone's interested, my resume's here.

Jobs in tech are sucking massively.

Then again, they just voted to take 2 teachers' days of pay in the last two days of this year because the committee in charge of the system(School Board) squandered the money on self-serving contracts and now their budget is short. Their attitude is "work the days but don't get paid...".

The school sys. is pretty bad. It's smeared all over the newspapers EVERY day. One problem or proof of corruption after another. :(

Teachers are up in arms.

I mean, when you go to college, four years, intern for two and then just start making 28.5k. Only to have some fatcat mis-spend it on his mistress and have to dock you a couple of days, things get ugly, you know?

But I don't see this problem hitting critical mass. It just seems to get worse and worse and people get more and more disenfrancished but nothing seems to happen.

On a side note, check out the last question on my 6th grade final:

Scientific Computation
A mini-rocket is in flight and is moving at a velocity of 60m/s.  It is exhibiting a forward force of 1000N and has a mass of 100kg.  Identify the distance the rocket travelled.

Can we ignore the effects of gravity?

Is the rocket in an atmosphere? If so can we ignore drag?

I never introduced trajectory and gravity in class, so yeah, biff 'em. As for air resistance, I never gave them the computation for that either.

You shouldn't ignore gravity.  I know these kids are 11, but you're just making it harder on the physics teachers who will get them in a few years and have to deprogram all the things their elementary teachers taught them.

In this example, the weight of the rocket is about the same as the upward thrust of the engine, making me wonder how it ever got off the ground at all.  If it does get off the ground, you haven't specified how much fuel is in the rocket-- if there is enough fuel, it will travel an infinite distance, otherwise, it will burn out and crash to the ground.  I'm not sure what the question is meant to ask.
