Jeremy: regarding quartz extreme...

i didn't want to post in the other thread because i didn't want the message to get lost in the debate going on there.

your ibook will support the quartz extreme. 32 MB is just what APple is saying you need but its not the bare min. Its more dependant on the T&L unit then the memory. so your ibook should use it fine, just maybe not as optimal.

have to wait till end of summer however... :(

2 things.
1. I thought Jeremy was still out of luck because the vid card in his iBook has no T&L, not just because of the memory.

b. I don't wanna hear no bitchin about Mac speed. As I write this I'm running IE 5.1 for Mac OS 8.1 on a PowerMac 7200/120. It drags hairy ass, hardcore.

I wonder what speed my Performa is, I've got another one of these I could rip the HDD out of... heh.

10.2 is still about 4 months away.  There's a lot of things that can happen between now and then.  Apple managed to squeeze all sorts of cool things into 10.2 at this point, and the keynote didn't even cover things that were seen in one of the few very early builds.

It's really no use arguing about a feature that's still 4 months away.

While I doubt that an 8MB ATI RAGE Mobility 128 (2 year old tech) will be able to handle Jeremy's Quartz Extreme needs, it doesn't mean his iBook will be slower.  If anything, it'll perform faster than 10.1 with the core optimizations and GCC 3 recompile.

i thought the radeon mobility was in teh ibook. I guess i was wrong. Anywhooo, as fuxoingman has already mentioned, there will be other optimzations other then just pure hardware solutions. heh, my might G4/533 dual mofo will not get quartz extreme as i have a lethargic rage 128 pro card with a whopping huge 16megs of yummy vram. Do you see me getting all sad and upset! NOOOO!!! Heck i still love the mac! power to the RDF!!!!

/me sips on some kool-aid

well, with a vid upgrade you should be good to go with Panther's optomizations shouldn't ya?

heh, actually i have very few problems with OS X, so the optimizations will be a very welcomed feature but not one that i'd die without.

however i am at a loss why i experienced two kernel panics right at startup. The two were a week or two apart and happened when i turned on some appliace or lights while the computer was booting. No idea if its powersurge or memory failing...

beyond that OS X rocks my world!

but I do reaaalllllllyyyyyyy want Windows XP fast user switch feature! I want i want i want!!!! i might get a pc when my mac is EOL

It's even more fun with the Power Toys. You just hit Win+U to scroll through usernames, and when you let go it asks you for the password, and bam, you're in business. That's pretty damn cool. I just wish you could do it on a domain. Hopefully it works on .Net Server domains... mmmmm.

Yeah, fast user switch would be a welcome addition...not having to quit all apps before you log out would be the shizzy of my dyzznizznizz.

I guess XP is good at certain things.  :P
