The towers are sweet but they make the iDew look positively cheap.
Looks like the iMint is my next bet!
Mad.

Well...turns out my purchase wasn't too bad at all seeing that the G5 might not ever come to fruition (that's almost a pun...but not quite...maybe I should have said iFruit[ion]).
If Apple doesn't do something quick...not even the iApps and FCP3 and all those recently acquired companies will save it.
Of course, I'm over-generalizing the problem but, seriously, Apple's gotta do something about the speed problem.

Wut? And you think the eMac isn't underpowered?
Quite frankly? No. I run Photoshop 4/6 on a 400 Blueberry iFruit with only 64 mb of RAM. I play Q3A on the same machine. A G4 700 == PIII 933(minimum) which is about the same as most budget machines for the educational market(all our HPs are PIII 866-1gig).
Plus, with 1/2 gig(1 gig expandable) of RAM AND a combo drive all for a "dimer" above 1500, isn't bad. None of my machines has more than a quarter of a gig of RAM. A geForce 2 MX isn't great but it's better than what I've got.
When I bought my Dual-800 I was like "this sucks compared to the present PCs...might as well go for the dualie so I won't feel stupid when they release the G5's in 3 months from now"...but then I started shitting my pants hearing rumors about the G5 and knowing that even my Dual-G4 would be obsolete if the G5 did come out.
It hasn't and it won't.
Dual G4 machine is expensive, to be sure, but it's about as fast as a single 1.7+ Pentium/Athlon. That's not slow.

I'm not so sure. Financially, they're doing better than Compaq and HP, despite Compaq and HP's huge comparable market share(which is why Apple's stock valuation, IN PART, is higher)...
Of course, I'm over-generalizing the problem but, seriously, Apple's gotta do something about the speed problem.
*shrug* You're talking to a guy that develops on a PIII 500/256/TNT2 and G3400/64/ATI. And who owns a Compaq 933/128/TNT2 and Dell lappie 1gig/128/16
To me, the new iMint is *much* faster/stronger than any of the above. It'll be a nice upgrade for my iFruit.
Granted, I'm not buying it yet. Prolly in a year. I can still get some miles out of my iFruit. In a year, the iMint should be dust(in which case I get a tower or iDew) or it'll be a hit, in which case I'll own an improved iMint.

As fast as what?
My LAPTOP running on a 366mhz CPU (this is an old Compaq 7400) with 128 mb of RAM runs Quake III faster than my B&W at 350 with 620 mb of ram and a better video card.

Wow...I've got the exact same setup but the result was the complete opposite.

The cube was almost that - except that it cost as much as an ibook.
Just gut the imac and put in a pretty case.

I haven't looked too closely, though; is there a downside to it?

Not too bad, I think.
I don't build my own. As a result, I buy my hardware via the school sys and the cheapest PC I can get my hands on is that crummy Compaq I mentioned for 899.
For 1500(not even twice the price), I can get the same speed proc on the iMint. Four times as much RAM. A graphics card that is more than twice as good. A HD that is twice as capacious. Two FW, Two USB, ethernet AND modem(Compaq doesn't come wi it), as well as all the free iApps: iDVD, iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto. Oh, and then there's that combo-drive thing...The 'Paq only comes with a regular CD drive.
The monitors are the same size and the iMint is twice as small and looks better.
Only real advantage on the 'Paq is the price and the warranty. The warranty is longer but we all know what kind of experience I've had with my 'Paq, haven't we? I think I've bitched enough about it on here.
Compaq's service with me has SUCKED. The ultimate in assosity.
As for the price, the iMint is not even twice the price(75% more) but it's more than twice as "loaded".
And, let's be honest after all, we're on OSY. It looks MUCH better than a BEIGE tower. A nice black or aluminum ATX case might compete but they don't offer them in my channels and I'm not about to perform a transplant.

It'd be nice to pick up an imac style machine for less that I could use with my existing monitors.

So far, we have put together two machines, out of 4 that we found in the junk heap. Ones a 166 the other a 200 mhz, 64 mb of ram, windows 98. Both Pentium based(Just realized, since I had no control over it, I haven't even bothered to check the processor type. 66 mhz bus).
Anyway, our school has a bunch of ifruits, and, about half of them work great. The other half are not so great.
I get the distinct impression that the better taken care of computers work, and the others are not bothered with.
That said, the discussion over horsepower concerns are really questionable. Both our cheap Pentium scavenger jobs,
and the ifruits are pretty much fine for what the computers are used for in education.
The 17 inch monitors are a great idea, view wise. I wonder power wise, what the increase is going to be, to say a school that has 200 ifruits with 15 inch screens, moving up to 17's?
By the way, the tubes we use on the pcs are 13 inch junk monitors.
I guess what I am trying to get at is computer geek forums are pretty far away from the target area for the emac.
For what most of these computers do, I am not really sure the larger monitor is that big a deal.
Maybe in the tech lab, but, for desk space, etc. the 15 inch ifruits are a very good idea.
A 15 inch fruit, usb floppy drive, and cables, fits nicely on a one person school desk. The larger e fruit footprint might create a rather serious space problem...
My two cents.

My kids saw the commericial on MTV and after fighting, tooth and nail, about how "Macs suck", all the girls think the iMacs are "cute" and all the boys think the eMac is sweet.

It looks like black steel and glass and looks like a spike but the ATX fitting is perfect. I don't know how they did it.
