Is $42000 too much to ask?

I recently sent my resume in response to an add in a local metropolitan newspaper.  It asked for salary requirements for an Entry Level user support analyst.

I consulted Salary.com for a comparable job, and the average for the Twin Cities area was 40,000.  I'm willing to work for less, but I didn't want to lowball myself.  I'd be expected to honor my requirement in case of hiring, so I didn't want to paint myself into a corner.

I did say that it was negotiable though.

What say yuo?

It's only a 5% increase above the average, so that doesn't seem too bad. From a statistician's point of view, the thing to do would have been find the standard deviation from the midpoint and then cut that in half, either above or below.

Asking simply for the average seems boring by comparison.

From memory, one standard deviation on either side covers 68% of cases. Two covers IIRC, 95%; and three gets 99.7%.

No one has anything to add/say?

I guess I had a supremely wonderful suggestion then. Or you're all too stoned to see the message.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. The asking salary doesnt mean a whole at this level. Maybe for a higher position they'd take it into account.

Salary.com is hyper-inflated when it comes to pay in my area.

It *might* be in yours. But if you get it, all's the better. :)

Same here, I only wish I made what Salary.com says I should be making.

Indeed. El Salario says I should make 3 times what I do now. I could definately do with that, but it ain't happenin here. They've got to be taking averages from the huge cities elsewhere in the state to be coming up with the smaller ones. They're nuts.

Entry Level user support analyst

Entry level tech support?

$40k sounds pretty high for that kind of job.  I worked for Electronic Arts as a "Quality Assurance Analyst" and got $9.50 an hour.  :( Tech support is generally considered on the low portion of the totem pole, unless you're doing other stuff as well.

Entry level tech support?

They called it,"Associate Level"

Actually, I did interview for an entry level Tech Support/Admin position in Minneapolis that was pretty close to this one's job description.  It offered to pay $48,500. :)

I was among the strongest candidates, but I didn't get it.

Well, I definitely deserve a raise then.

Yes, especially considering your great contribution to the human race, which is OSY!

Worry not, when the Mighty AYB accends his throne, there will be much rejoicing. :)

Ah fuck it. There was much rejoicing when Zaphod Beeblebrox became President of the Imperial Galactic Government, too.

...Perhapse, but that rejoicing shall not nearly be as jubilant as the rejoicing surrounding the festivities of the first official Year of the AYB (which shall be the length of the festivities to which you are all invited :) )
