I've downloaded the latest Linux geforce drivers. But they're all in .rpm and Debian doesn't use rpm. I've tried updating XFree86 to 4.20 so it'll autoconfig properly, since 4.20 supposedly supports the GF3, but Debian tells me that there are incompatible libraries and that those must be updated first.
All I want is to get a simple VGA-based GUI going and hopefully it'll be much easier to manage things from there when I can snag updates from directly from within Linux. It can't be as difficult as it's seems so far, at least that's what I've been told. But this command line BS is getting old really fast.
Any help would be appreciated.

Time for me to move on to another distro. I need to get my feet wet before making that headlong cliff dive that is Debian.

w00t! Got it working after much fudging around with XF86Config. Sure was a massive pain though.
What specific fudgery did you have to endure?

It refused to work with the SVGA xserver so I had to use the VGA16 one and keep picking a lower and lower res mode until I found one that worked. Oh, that was after I had to manually enter the horizontal and vertical fresh range of my monitor since the choices provided kept giving me an "out of range" message when I'd crank up startx. After I found one that worked and actually got a graphical desktop, the mouse wouldn't work. I couldn't get it to properly detect the USB mouse, so I switched the mouse to the PS/2 port and found out through sheer googling luck that I had to edit the /dev/mouse default to /dev/psaux to make that work. Once I got over that hurdle it wouldn't detect my keyboard, so I had to tell XF86Config NOT to select a standard 101-button US keymapping and then go through a few manual steps to tell it to use a standard 101-button US keymapping. :wtf?:
If I had still had my old K6-2/350 w/ the PCI Riva128 card, the install probably wouldn't have been so difficult. But for a newer system, Debian is not the way to go unless you are well experienced in the ways of Linux voodoo.

Now I'm sure that Debian is the OS for the S&M crowd and I will be its whipping boy no longer.

cd /usr/pkgsrc/(I forget  )/kde/
make install
You have KDE, and all required libs. Swanky. :)
Only trouble is waiting for the thing to get updated. (I don't think KDE 3 is in there yet, which is so much better than 2.2, but you can always go to the site and get it yourself if the pkgsrc version is too old.)

Bleck. Go grab a BSD man, their cake to install stuff in. :)cd /usr/pkgsrc/(I forget  )/kde/

It's easier to /stand/sysinstall and install xfree and kde from there.

Eh, I'll stick with RedHat for now because...well...it's working and my ansu is still sore from Debian. After I take the training wheels off this Linux bike, then I can start figuring out how I really want to ride it.
for training, use mandrake.
filthy french stuff, yes, but its made for morons.

That was my first choice but I couldn't find a site that would feed me the ISOs at anything approaching a realistic transfer rate. It took quite a bit of hunting to find a decent FTP site for the RH ISOs.

Gee, I'm glad I'm not French, or I might take offense at that statement. :)
