New Look for OSY

Well, I learned how to make Aqua buttons in Photoshop, but my home copy of Photoshop was being very sucktacular (refusing to load, for some insane reason) so I tried using Paint Shop Pro instead.  Surprisingly, all the L33T PHOTOSHOP FEATURES D00D!!11 had their analogues in PSP, so I made some lovely Aqua-inspired buttons for the forum.  If you don't see them, use your browser's "Refresh" button.

Take that, Steve Jobs!

They're huge and gel-like!

Hurrah

The OSY button is freakin' huge... Rather nice though.

Yeah, I could cut it down a tad... hang on.

Okay, how's that?

Are you sure you weren't running them on Linux under WINE? :)

So how does one get some of the features for making buttons like these for Paint Shop pro?

Are you sure you weren't running them on Linux under WINE?

It's weird, isn't it, that after I posted that Photoshop wouldn't run under Wine (it doesn't) that it would start to exhibit the same behavior under Windows.  Perhaps Adobe has added some code that randomly checks to make sure you are on a Macintosh, and if not slows everything to a crawl, but every once in a while said code breaks and causes the application to stop loading...

Anyway.

To make Aqua buttons, you start with an oval selection.  This is done by making a rectangular selection, then adding two circular ones to the ends.  This is actually easier on PSP, which allows you to make perfect circles and starts the circular selection CENTERED on the mouse pointer, not some weird upper-left thingy.

Anyway, you fill the oval with a gradient, going from grey->light grey.  Make a new layer, and make a white->transparent gradient.  Resize this layer to about 90% width 50% height and move it close to the top of the first layer, leaving a little dark gap at the top.  Duplicate the layer, flip vertical, and move it down for the bottom highlight.  Gaussian blur the bottom highlight, and change the blending to "overlay".  Add a drop shadow to the whole image.  Add a new layer with a white->transparent gradient and change the blending level to "multiply" for that layer.  Play around with the transparencies of these layers to get the rounded effect, then use the burn tool to make the upper corners darker.  Then add text, etc.

See? Simple!

Yes, It looks great.

I like the Aqua-ish Gel Cap look. :)

It sucks, and the font is horrible.

I guess I'll be the dissenting party...

The new buttons suck ass chowder. They're far too bulbous, wrongly colored, and they stand out too much. I don't need widgets to be a distraction. These are.

Perhaps the Font could use some reconsideration.  The black doesn't seem right

Understatement! Understatement!

NOW BRING BACK THE AQUA STYLE !!!

Um... er... they're huge!

But they reminded me to take some ibuprofen, so they do have some extraneous use.

I can understand the resistance to the black text, though -- it just seems too dark to me, overall, esecially on the smaller widgets.  And the huge ones gobble up far too much space.

But otherwise, I have no complaints. ;)

I'll try it with a white font, but the letters get very washed out.

IMHO, JR,

The White looks a little better, but still not quite right.

I can't put my finger on it, but solid white just doesn't look natural.

Hmmmm.

Okay, how about this?

I tried with a drop shadow on the text, but it didn't look right either.

Maybe it's the font antialiasing?

I think the font's OK myself, but the white looks a little... bland on the giant widgets.  Just my personal observation, mind you -- I can live with them. ;)

nice, but i have to agree, the 'OSY Discussion Forum' is rather large. Maybe a little smaller would be less obtrusive.

As for your fonts, its a tad to blurry but I'm not sure if its the compression and the artifacts that's giving that impression.

Jeremy Reimer

Mon Mar 25 17:41:38 2002

I could drop the "OSY Discussion Forum" size again a little bit, but it is kinda funky at the large size.

I'll leave it like this for a little while, then ask again.  Sometimes it takes a while for people to get used to changes.

And of course you can't please everyone.  Given any artistic style, there will always be people who say it's great and those who say it sucks.  Something for me to think about if I ever go into graphic design...

I'm saying that bevelling and "bubble"/textured effects are easily done using a filter.

Like, say, BladePro or Alien.

Just thought you'd like to know for next time, although you probably already know.

Yes, Madan, but it's not always possible to have every conceivable filter loaded on one's PC, and it is sort of neat to figure out how the effect is made.  I do love learning new things...

No need to get miffed. If you want some filters, type "free photoshop filters" in google.

If you want, you can have some of mine.

I like the new icons but I don't think they match with the site.

Maybe if you revamped the entire site but then you wouldn't be able to finish your book...
