where can i download free dev tools for windows?

i'd like to dabble with code during my free time at work. Me just wants to get dev tools almost as good as the free one you get from Apple. In other words, full blown GUI IDE and with visual dev tools.

I might try out DirectX but i'd rather stick to OpenGL so that way i can work on my code at home to on my mac.

Is there such a thing, I ask you 1337 OSY members, yes this is what I ask and answer I would like.

Sadly, VS.NET is not free but sounds like it is worth paying for.

Besides, if MS gave development tools away for free, can you just see Borland crying?  I mean, instead of admiting that their development environment just plain sucks they'll claim they were beaten by "Monopolistic Practices"

Anyway, back to OW's inquiry:

I don't know, did you try GCC? :)

Speaking of borland, they are giving their 5.5 compiler away for free.

Well, you could download the .Net Framework SDK and then SharpDevelop, a GPL IDE for C#. That would get you started on .Net, if that fits your socks...

Microsoft used to give away a stripped-down version of their Visual Basic 6 compiler and IDE, but they've taken it off their website.  Everything's VS.NET now.

<maclot>Microsoft can suck my dick.
Everyone knows the G4 is faster than Intel at everything and MS is crash-happy in its new NT-architecture. I get plenty of BSODs on my Win 2k box and MS is really expensive up front. More than Mac. OS X is the bestest OS evar and you can all eat me. NT is built off DOS.

And when everybody thought that this topic was laid to rest, here it comes back again for teh poopie head.

I found a nifty page here for all sorts of free programming goodness.

thanks, but they all seem to be .NET tools or C# compilers. I want something for C/C++ as OpenGL is a C based API.

Unless these tools have C wrappers. I have a copy of GNU Compiler (IIRC) somewhere that i got with my 3D graphics book. No wait! I have a GNU compiler with my "C+ for dummies" book!!!

fuck I forgot about that. I believe its command line but not that I care even though I'd like to play with the visual dev. tools. This way I get to make some nifty windows apps so you guys can download and play with and then praise me as I indeedious enjoy praise!

;)

thanks tho!
