I finally god my HD and my NIC. KVM comes monday.

However, the fuckin FD cant be bothered to work and the cdrom seems to say fuck you when it comes to bootable cds.

So basically I have a Duron600 w/512mb ram and a 40gig drive I can do nothing with.

Check to see if the ribbon cable is the right way around on the floppy.

Only a coulpe things come to mind:
for teh floopy: It may be easiest to get a new one, or just fix the CD thing first. We've got them in Wal-Marts for $14. I'd hope that you could find one someplace for under 15-20 euros.
El-CD-ROM-O: Have you checked the BIOS settings yet? I thought most mobos shipped with HDs as the first boot device, with CDs later or disabled. If not, it's probly b0rked.

I've also found that if the CDRom isn't master on the channel older or cheaper ones just can't be bothered to boot from a cd...

Edit:

Also check to make sure the bios is on 'autodetect' or 'cdrom' otherwise the OS loads the CDRom drivers and the bios doesn't know it exists.

If you know what I just said, ignore it. :)

Unexpectedly, the FDD started to work once I changed the power cable!

The cdrom is still no dice however.

And another problem arose.
When I boot up from the Openstep4.2 bootdisks it asks me after I put the driver disk into the drive:

Really Install?

But Yes or Y arent accepted!

Riso: What brand/model is that CD-ROM drive?  Is it new or old?  I don't recall if you mentioned this in a previous thread.

I ask because I personally have a few old CD drives (like 4x speed) that just won't boot a bootable CD.  Put in another drive -- even if it's that old, just another manufacturer -- and all is well.  I've only run into a few CD drives that won't boot a CD, but they're out there (though quite old now).

Riso: IF the PC"s are using Cat5 style cableing you will need a "Crossover" cable, available from any decent computer store. Hell, I've even seen em at Circuit City.

Yes, that's quite possible unfortuntely.

The CD drive in my mother's computer won't accept CD-RW discs, but can read CD-R discs just fine.

It is also an old generic drive pulled from an IBM.

sounds like you just need a new cdrom drive.
