Sorry about the Outage today

Just when I thought pegasus3d.com was being pretty stable, I find out it's been down all day.  :(  I had to stop the omnihttpd service and restart it again.  Why this happens is beyond me.  Maybe the script kiddies are after me again?

That's why I run IIS 6.0.

=)

I'd run IIS, but there's a 10-user limit on Win2k.  Not that OSY often gets that much traffic, but I'd rather not have that limitation.

NOT ACCEPTABLE!

hehe, j/k

Have you tried Apache under Windows?
Riso

I recommend Apache 2.

It's pretty stable and the performance is much better than apache 1's.

Not half as sorry as I was.

Indeed. I was in the same situation as Pizza: I actually had to... to... work yesterday.
pegasus3d.com needs a server farm.

Well, I can look into switching over to Apache, but if it doesn't solve these outage problems then I'm going to shoot Eric Raymond in the head.

Silly guy, why do you need an excuse? :)

Heh, well I just checked into the Windows versions of Apache, and the only stable release is 1.2.23, the 2.0.32 release is beta and contains serious bugs.  Lame!  Until a good release of 2.0.x is available, I don't think I'll switch.

What serious bugs?

Apache 2.0.32 was released as a BETA. That means it is NOT yet production-stable code. After one week, we pulled the .msi installer on 26 Feb, after a user reported a significant problem that the installer may delete the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run key upon uninstall. Until that behavior is verified or corrected, and until the service installs properly for all users, we are holding off further binary distribution.

The 2.0.32 port also contained a significant bug in parsing or transmission of larger files in some cases. This is an extremely obvious bug when it's triggered, the side effect is usually a GP fault. The server also could not start on any NT installation running Terminal Services. Both bugs are fixed for the next, 2.0.33 release. Knowing all that, if you still insist on trying the beta while waiting for .32, you can find it in the .old URI hiding below this location, with the other Win32 packages we do not recommend.

So, I'm holding off on it.  I tried installing the stable release on my work PC just for kicks, it's easy to install, but I think getting all the Perl stuff (cgi scripts) working for the OSY forum would be a nightmare...

Funny that, last one I used was 2.0.28 and it gave me no problems.

Typical slashdot/OSS hippies. They can spend all the time on the *nix version but tell the Windows users to pound sand, not realizing they can increase their market share by releasing a STABLE Win32 version.

Apache is a GREAT lightweight HTTP server. It's not IIS, or to the level of IIS, but then again it was never meant to be.

You know what's really funny?

XP Pro has IIS5.1 which msft packed into a nice little cab file called IIS6.CAB.

What a deception!

Btw JR, you can install the Server version of IIS on 2k Pro. IF you have a Server cd somewhere that is.

Well, the Linux pack comes out around May, so I imagine it'll be capable of running Apache before too long. :) Incedentally, how is your Xbox serving anything? I apparently don't know much about the software available. I still need to get my ass in gear and get my Dreamcast running NetBSD. I got ahold of Soul Calibur and well... Heh. ;)

That's about it, ayup. I do have some other stuff, Railroad Tycoon 2, Quake 3 (needed it to setup my NIC when I get NetBSD running...)  and my brother grabbed MDK2, but basically, it's "Soul" ;) purpose is to play that game. :)

If you could tell me how to serve websites off a xbox I will buy one.
