That's nothing but pure, unfiltered ass. One would (incorrectly) assume that a single geographical region with a single currency, would have the same items priced well, the same. Are French iBooks crappier? do they cost less to ship? Or, are Apple greedy cunts? You decide!

In other news: you seem to be the last person I would expect to buy an iBook Riso, why the sudden interest?

Riso seems to have perpetual problems communicating his feelings to othes E_M.  One day we hope he will come out of his shell and tell others when something is not allright with him.  As it stands, we all fear that his passive nature will get him into an unhealthy relationship due ot his inability to stand on his own two feet and express himself.  He'll probably become a Fat-Mole infested Smelly German Woman's Bitch!

The ibooks are definetly all the same. Just the fuckin price isnt.

I mean, wtf? It's like a cats jump geographically to france and its 200 greddy Eurobucks less.

And I like the ibook because it's 1) pretty 2) I want to mess with OS X,3) it is one of the best notebooks price/performance wise, 4) battery life, 5) it would make my dad think that I finally got a "real" 'puter, 6) I want one. it's shiny. 7) it has the gigaflops.

I would happen to guess those price jumps are due to country based taxes...
Riso

Mon Mar 11 20:33:27 2002

In that case france and britain would have 0 tax.

1680:1.2 (20% tax)=1400

Evil Merlin

Mon Mar 11 20:41:37 2002

I could be. I think it depends on the country of manufacture.... not all countries treat other countries the same when it comes to taxes/tarriffs.
Riso

Mon Mar 11 20:55:13 2002

This is fucked.

The germans have 15% tax on pcs, but to get to that price it would have to be 17%.

not all countries treat other countries the same when it comes to taxes/tarriffs.

I dont think its that way in the EU.

That is indeed fucked.

Over here, you pay sales tax.  If bought over the 'Net, you can get out of it usually.

The most fucked tax ever has to be the cartax in Denmark.

150% on cars! Yes, 1-5-0!

Evil Merlin

Mon Mar 11 22:39:37 2002

How can ANYONE pay 150% tax for a car?

So if you are going for a $10,000 car, it ends up costing you $25,000???

Riso

Mon Mar 11 23:00:21 2002

Manufacturers place the price very low to make it affordable for ppl.

But that means germans drive to denmark to buy cars because they only have to buy german tax and not denmarks.

I empathize with you, Riso.

That's about all I can say about it, but it's honest.

Ever consider buying your computers in the US and having it shipped to you?

in Hong Kong we pay 200+ percent on car taxes alone. Add to that gas is up the ass.

the reason is supposedly to prevent people from buying cars and making them use transportation.

Great job that did.  Look in the Guiness Book of World Records.
Hong Kong has the greatest numbers of Mercedes Benz per capita in the world, and also the greatest number of Rolls Royce per capita in the world. What the hey? Thats fucking 200% car tax and these people own some expensive cars already. It also explains why Hong Kong is the most affluent society in the world. Then again Hong Kong has the 'truest' capitalistic system in the world.

Anyway, tax, tarrifs, can be a factor on computer purchases.

I like macs, but I have noticed that if you live in another country, bend over and bah like a sheep.

You get screwed on initial pricing, support is usually non-existent, and, if anything goes really wrong, you are on your own.

So, think long and hard before you buy into a monopoly run, distribution network, or support group.

In words you can understand,
"Fuck em".

Riso,

What I'm thinking of is have someone in the US purchase it (you pay 'em back, of course) and then send it to you as a 'gift' -- ISTR a difference in the tax you have to pay, or something like that.

My in-laws often send stuff to one of their daughters who's spending a year in France, and I don't recall her paying taxes.  (That's not to say that she isn't, just that she hasn't told me about it.  YMMV.)

Well, IIRC a flight from Italy to the UK is something less than 40euros. Take the plane, go to London, buy the iBook cheap, pay a visit to mr. Pizza, throw away the packaging and stuff the iBook in your backpack. If the custom officer asks it that's your computer, answer "Yes, of course. I had it since 1995"

Worked everytime for me :)

Company I worked for (before they were bought out) had a branch office in Italy.  We used to send them hardware all the time, marked for customs as "business items" or somesuch.  I'll have to see if they had to pay taxes to receive them.

The director of that office is here in the US now to visit the "new" company, so hopefully I'll see him this week.
