Got it wholesale from work. TIME TO BURN SOME PENTIUMS.. er.. MST3K episodes... heh.
Jeremy ReimerTue Mar 5 01:42:52 2002
OK, we're back.
Lots of dust in the computer. <cough>
Anyone know what the best CD burning software is?

indeed!
DeAtheTue Mar 5 07:36:45 2002
I don't think a question of what is the best software, but what do you want to burn?
Copy Protected Games? CloneCD.
Downloaded Games? CDRWin
Everyday burning? Nero.
Imitation GruelTue Mar 5 09:05:42 2002
I second the 'indeed!' remark.
HarbingerTue Mar 5 15:18:50 2002
Add a third "indeed" from me. And Deathe makes a good point, as I use very much the same apps for the same reasons.

Thanks. I got Nero, and it works great except that when its burning, my system becomes totally unresponsive, like the mouse cursor is even affected, it's like I'm running on 0.2% CPU speed left over. This not what I expect for my Windows 2000. Any ideas?

That ain't normal. Have you opened Task Manager to see exactly how much CPU time is being used by Nero?
Howzabout the CDRW drive -- IDE or SCSI? If IDE, is it set to DMA mode (instead of PIO)?
I use Nero quite a lot on my video/audio recording machine and I can multitask like a mofo -- I don't detect any slowdown when Nero is burning, and I'm using a 'crappy' IDE LiteOn 12x CDRW. This is that new recorder, huh? What brand/model? Tried looking for any firmware updates for it?

You dont have a shitty VIA based system, do you?
Jeremy ReimerWed Mar 6 21:45:28 2002
It is, in fact, a shitty VIA chipset, but one that has been rock solid for everything else (Asus CUV4X) and never given me a problem when multitasking. (Except, come to think of it, when moving large files between IDE drives.. hmmm...)
HarbingerThu Mar 7 05:16:40 2002
I'd used a P3V4X (the previous model) and it was solid as well. To ask again (since I didn't see you reply), are you sure that all the IDE devices are running in DMA mode? What devices are on the chains, and in what master/slave config?
HitScanThu Mar 7 13:46:41 2002

Eww. I have heard of that. Can't remember what to do about it though, as it's not a problem for me. maybe check viahardware.com or something. There's no good reason for it to do that.
DeAtheFri Mar 8 01:38:58 2002
Moving large files between IDE bus? VIA PCI Latency issue, you have a Live in the box? Try Broussards PCI Fix, may work for ya.
AllYorBaseRBelong2UsFri Mar 8 01:43:47 2002
..or try some poop.
Jeremy ReimerFri Mar 8 05:18:26 2002
Any way I can figure out what devices are on what IDE channel without rebooting? (Besides opening up the case and stuff)
I went into Device Manager and two of my devices (I think they are the CDRW and ZIP drive) are in PIO mode, even though "Use DMA if available" is checked. WTF??? The HD is on UltraDMA though.
DeAtheFri Mar 8 06:00:42 2002
Oh, shit I forgot about that, your using Win2k right? In Win2k it defaults to having your secondary controller use PIO, go in to device manager, IDE controllers/HD controllers, and set your secondary channel to use DMA instead of PIO
Jeremy ReimerFri Mar 8 19:48:25 2002
But I can't! The only options are "Use DMA if available" and "PIO only" and it's set to "Use DMA if available" yet in the greyed out section, it says Current mode: PIO mode for both drives?? wtf???

IIRC, the VIA 4in1 kit has a SETDMA utility in it. When run, it reports what devices are connected to each controller, and positions.
RisoFri Mar 8 22:19:03 2002
I hereby recommend a pc upgrade.
P4 1.6A, DDR,MSI 845 Ultra (Raid+usb2 versions available).
DeAtheFri Mar 8 22:45:53 2002
Huh. Odd.
You have the CDRW as master?
I know that my older AMD IDE drivers wouldn't give me the option of setting udma mode, but that's because it'd auto detect if something was UDMA compatible....
