I was there because:

-he's a co-founder of Doom...
-he's an underdog...
-he's one of the innovators: coding for the pocket pc...
-he's started his other new company after SID Interactive fell apart: MonkeyStone
-he helped Carmack wi the Q1 code.
-he's the Rob Liefeld of computer gaming...
-it's cool to go back to 1999 and remember how Daikatana was going to be the $#!% ....but wasn't.
-I also looked up Tod Porter
-And Warren Specter
-it's sad that a good developer, like Romero, let his skills atrophy and let his ego get the better of him...
-it's intruiging, in a morbid, post-mortem kind of way, to watch this archeological "fossil" of gaming history still function.

I was the first person to visit his site, btw.

He helped with the design if I recall. I don't remember much coding type stuff coming from him. Either way, yes, Doom rocked the earth in it's day, as should it's great-grandson.

-he's an underdog...

That's an interesting spelling of "Raving damn-fool egomaniac and grand marketing dinglefuck" ;)

-he's one of the innovators: coding for the pocket pc...

I don't know that that's remarkably innovative. A few companies will sell you pPC software ;) What kind of games is he working on anyhow? Control will be difficult, to say the least.

-he's started his other new company after SID Interactive fell apart: MonkeyStone

Some people never learn, eh?

-he helped Carmack wi the Q1 code.

I'm doubting this a lot. I believe he was strictly "design" on Q1. We all know how well that worked out. (i.e. it was shit for story and continuity, but hey, mp. :cheesy: )

-he's the Rob Liefeld of computer gaming...

Call me an uncultured swine, but I don't know who that is.

-it's cool to go back to 1999 and remember how Daikatana was going to be the $#!% ....but wasn't.

Yes. "Suck it down" indeed. Steaming, heaping, reeking piles of $#!%.

-I also looked up Tod Porter
-And Warren Specter

Couple of stand-up guys. He should have taken notes.

-it's sad that a good developer, like Romero, let his skills atrophy and let his ego get the better of him...

Fossil indeed. If his next "Nex Big Thing" is hyped like daikatana, or is as big a failure, he'll hopefully be extinct from the dev world. Perhaps he could go into hotdog vending.

I was the first person to visit his site, btw.

I find this humorus. I'm sure I intended to write more about this, but my little mind has sputtered. It is indicative of his current fanbase though. :)

His game is hyperspacedeliveryboy.

I think everyone deserves a second(third) chance.

And yes, he was a programmer on Doom.

No discussion of John Romero can be complete without a link to the epic saga that was the development (and downfall) of Daikatana:

You did have a good point earlier then Mad. How the hell can you go from working on Doom to making Daikatana? Shouldn't there be a brain surgery or car accident in between? It's like "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?" The world may never know.

Read the article-- it explains a lot.  The short version-- John Romero was a moderately talented programmer and good level designer, and because of this he thought he could suddenly create a big company from scratch that would write three games at one time, one of which was his vision of the ultimate FPS.

It's a good lesson-- just because you are good at programming (or level design, or whatever) does not mean you will be good at management or project leadership.

well i read throught the entire article. Interesting read, very interesting, but damn that site for its choice of background color and the contrast of the font color. Reading OSY with the white background is nearly making me blind now. If the article wasn't that interesting i would have spared my eyes but that wasn't to happen.

none the less. good article.
