FUCK YOU VIA! HELLO INTEL!

Riso

Mon Feb 4 22:52:34 2002

I'm sick of that constant locking up of my pc without a reason, so I'm switchin.

With the prices of a P4 1.6's so low, I'm getting one.
Especially since it oc's to 2 easily.

New system:
P4 NW 1.6

VIA's Win32 drivers are shite, especially for NT/2000/XP

I tried telling everyone that.  That is why I dumped that Epox board (fuskin' southbridge corrupted my Win2000 install twice in one week) for an all AMD MP system.

No problems whatsoever.  I may get dual MP 2000+'s when me finds a job. Either that or get a Geforce4 and double the memory.

Dude, I'm using that Epox board right now. Exact same one with exact same memory (well I bought the mem from you). My friend who had one got fed up with it and bought a pre-built system and just gave his old one to me. Then his prebuilt system had conflicts with the via chipset and XP and he couldnt get anything to work on it, oh teh irony!

So far no problems running XP... knock on wood.

... knock on wood.

Maybe that's what I forgot to do.

BTW, congratulations on everything.  Mine and your friends loss are yuor gain.

However, on a new post whore note, I will be, hopefully, switching to some dual XP loving soon. I will, of course, be utilizing the MP chipset from AMD. Unless of course, I find a sweet deal on Tualatin's.

unless I decide my Geforce2MX @ 200x200 is a tad slow and I buy some crazy assed video card, I do have a 1 ghz, and it seems good enough, but I'd like the increased divx encoding speed.

Whoa!

If you get the dual XP's, AYB will no longer be the postwhore of power!  You shall be! :)

What's your rig right now, as well as your needs?  Perhaps we could put in our two cents as to what you should purchase.

My Tyan Tiger MP is a thing of beauty, but there seems to be one or two new Athlon MP Mobo's available.

A new GeForce4 Ti would be teh win as well. :)

Currently I have a AMD 750 slot A 'Classic' .95 ghz running at 1.0 ghz.
320 megs of PC133
20 gig Deskstar
GeForce2MX running at 200/200
CL ( Rebadged plextor ) 12x10x32
Samsung DVD
Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder
Linksys cheapy. 100.
PCI Winmodem of crap, although it has the highest connection speed of any 56k I've owned.
and a ViewSonic VG150 TFT Flatscreen.

I was thinking of the ASUS dual.

Oh, my needs... Hmm, in order actually.

#1: Stability.
#2: Memory performance.
#3: No onboard IDE Raid.
#4: Proper Implementation of the PCI Spec.
#5: No propeitary power connector.
#6: Economical, I won't have a huge amount to spend, probably just mobo/proc's/ram.

I think that's it. I don't need onboard audio/video, lan would be nice, but hey, I already got a card for it.

The only problem I see with the Asus is that it and the MPX chipset haven't been around too long.

Otherwise it looketh good!

I especially like the USB 2.0 built in.

Via chipset drivers? those 4-in-1 things?

Do you still need them with XP? Cos I'm running XP here and it's fine, and the only non Microsoft driver on the whole blessed thing is the nVidia GeForce one. Ultra-stable - the only thing that's brought it down was a drunk driver smashing into the bollard at our corner and frying the electicicty supply, which even nibs would have a hard time blaming on Microsoft.

That MSI K7D Master is looking pretty nice, hmmmm..

Wed Feb 6 22:07:32 2002

Yea, and there is a bug in the USB on those mpx chipsets from what I hear. The MSI comes with a addon USB Card... :) But, they still look good, the tyan looks nice as well, and it has the nice thing of being cheaper.

Hey, how big is your power supply in your box?

AllYorBaseRBelong2Us

Wed Feb 6 22:14:49 2002

400 Watts.  The only Board that takes a real uncommon to Power Supplies amongst these Dual Athlon Jobbies is the Thunder, which takes some sort of expensive proprietary model.

Otherwise there is some caveats to each I think, but suitable PS's shouldn't be hard to find or expensive.

Via released an XP-compatible version of the 4 in 1 drivers, though extremely late relative to XP's release. Most OEM using via boards just stuck with the MS ones, which in my experience cause less problems, and are a bit slower.

Actually, I have one of the good ones, it's a 20 gig, which has very little failures compared to the others, and it's been almost 2 years, april of 2000 is when I purchased mine, 2 cpu's ago. :)
