About to be seduced by Object Desktop

I played around with Object Desktop a bit in back in the old days of Win95/98, and pronounced it asstacular and crashtacular, with few features and no inherent purpose.

However I've started playing with it under Win2k and both it and the underlying OS are much more robust.  It looks like a hell of a lot of fun, plus there are works in progress using Object desktop to recreate much of the Aqua interface (apparently in bold defiance of Apple Legal)

Have any of you ever played with this stuff? Am I just wasting my time messing around with it when I should be writing and creating?

Yes. I like it but my Win 98 can't handle the burden. Plus, my beefiest work machine, my Dell, only has a quarter gig of RAM.

Word to the wise, if your Win OS doesn't have *FULL* PM (i.e. not 9x) AND your rig doesn't carry at least 500mb of RAM, do *not* download.

That is, of course, unless you enjoy watching your setup reboot (some ppl are sick that way)...

BTW, it *still* doesn't work for some applications: Older versions of PS didn't work for me. Why? I cannot say.

I messed arround with it about a year ago, but I was using 2k so it was at least more stable. But I had trouble creating a usefull interface with it. Maybe it's  worth a seccond look.

Well, I only have "a quarter gig" of RAM in this box, and I'm happily playing Half-Life and serving OSY and running Windowblinds and Object Desktop all at the same time.

Some of the themes are quite asstacular.  My favorite one is probably XP Platinum, it's quite cool.  I've tried the Aqua theme, of course, but all those pinstripes get a bit old.  :)

DesktopX is teh suck.

I tried it numerous times, found it made my desktop way to laggy, ( on a 1 ghz w/ .5 gig ram ) when I was running Win2k.

Unless things have drastically changed recently, it's a truckload of ass. Granted, it's a great idea, but there's fuck all documentation, and trying to find out how to combine things or do anything beyond the most basic is an excersize in futility. The fact that it was designed to work with OS/2 originally speaks volumes. ;)

As for Windowblinds, It comes with a Watercolor theme. A supar-asstacular stinking shitbag awful incestuously wrong fucking digital abortion of a watercolor theme. But I'm not bitter that it overwrote my nearly 100% perfect copy that took me weeks to do, oh no, not me. Rotten goat cunt fuckers.

I am enjoying the XP Platinum theme, it makes me want to upgrade to XP much less.

DesktopX... well... I hope someone can tell me that there's something cool I can do with it, because the novelty is starting to wear off again.

Let it pass. Do it for the children.

It always does.  Nifty groove by gifted amateurs may look great for a couple of hours, but after a while the processor cycles they make you eat and the fact that they're not, normally, that great a design makes you pine for how things were.

Just look at Mac OS X!

However I will say that the theme support in XP is nice. :) I found a really sweet QNX Style them that I'm using, and it doesn't appear to eat too much cpu time, there is a hit yea, but it's not that horrible.

That was to force Jer to upgrade. :)

Windowblinds 3 seems to use relatively few cycles compared to earlier versions, and it nicely integrates with the standard Display Properties panel.

Right now I'm testing a totally unauthorized Dock clone.  It's rather horrid.  How do Macintosh users put up with this crap?  Are they all on drugs?

That was a rhetorical question, right?

No, the Mac users here seem to be relatively sane...

OW would never let anyone accuse him of being sane.
