I frickin did it this time

Here's the scoop:

I just got done reinstalling windows2000 in my main machine:

Celeron 533@822
256Ram
20gigIBM & 13GigWD
HerculesMx
Live!
Linksys 10/100
etc..

I have spent the day hooking up my new broadband connection when the flakiness insued.

The device manager reported that all sorts of new network devices suddenly spawned into existance (I had tried to install another NIC right before this happended).  I tried to deal with them by disabling them and restarting, and later deleting them.  During this process, restarts took 10minutes or more to complete.

I finally got through the installation (I decided to hook the cable modem up to the USB port) and everything was initially fine untill I restarted again.

On restart IE had no access to broadband untill I ran deleted my old dialup connection.  Then broadband worked once again.

Then I reenabled my 10/100 LAN that I had disabled in the interim for one reason or another.  15 minutes later I lost broadband access.  I was able to reproduce this phenomenon.

I cant remeber what else I did, but after I did it I chose to restart.  I didn't have net access untill I made a bogus dialup connection account, and failed while trying to "use" it.  The net access failed again untill I disabled the LAN connection.

I called support.  he had me run ipconfig at the command prompt by releasing and renewing and then had me restart.

It re-restarted about 90% through the boot process
Then it BSOD's

I got it running by F8'ing during the next restart and selected the last known good config, and then it booted successfully.

He had me use ipconfig once more and restart

BSOD!

at that point I got off the phone to try to figure what the frick was going on.  After a few reboots, Win200 failed to boot at startup due to corrupted C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM, is what was reported.

I tried emergency repair a few time to new avail.

I reenstalled.

Crap!

I reinstalled.

that sucked!

My PC's 'just work'.

I buy hardware, install it, then the drivers, and all is peachy.

There where a few times when I had to do some tweaking fiddling around, especially with my old Vortex2 sound card, but that's cause the co. went tits up before they made good 2k drivers.

NT Kernal is Teh Win!

--- Edit,

For me this does NOT include linux, I'm relearning all that I had forgotten.

For me all the things that are supposed to be a  pain (via drivers for instance) seem to work, and all the stuff that is a given (a cpu not catching on fire at a mere 37 degrees celcius) seems to go horribly wrong.

Duff: You had a cpu catch fire at 37 C? Creepy.

AYB, with all the hardware crap you know, you're telling me you can't get a job for 40k?

Huh?

Come down to Fl and I can find you one in an HOUR.

Madan,

There's really not much demand over here for a half assed adept of tagnuttry who has no real experience :(

Perhaps I shall find a job within the next week.

Bullshit. You can network and you have hardware exp.

Take the fsking A+ test and *pass* it already.

Then, simply get a networking gig. With all the "tagnutry" crap you know, I'm pretty sure you'd be fine.

Let's put it this way. You know more than our own herald network specialist does.

You should have installed XP.

I was thinking about it, yet it costs almost $300 for the two tests required (though based on the content, I probably not to far from being able to easily pass such a test.

Thanks for your concern though Madan :)

This is no disrespect towards AYB, but that says about as much about the herald "network specialist" as it does him. ;) (i.e. AYB qualified, net goon unqualified. :cheesy: )

You can get jobs for knowing hardware?

Shit, sign me up.
