Should I Upgrade to XP?

Jeremy Reimer

I really like 2000.  Everything works, it's stable, all the apps and games I run work fine.

So why would I consider upgrading?

Here's the thing:  It looks nicer.  I keep seeing people post screenshots in the BF, and I think: wow, my Windows looks so boring.

Is this silly?  I think so.  And yet...

What do you think?

I have a close acquaintance who upgraded to XP because he liked ClearType, and because he liked the fonts it came with, standard.

Different strokes for different folks. All the boxen I work with are running Win2K SP2 and will not be upgraded beyond that except for service packs. My mom's Dell is also running 2K SP2.

Gamepad support seems to be better for XP.

my old top gun didn't have the nescessary drivers for 2000 so I couldn't use the hat switch. It was kind of pitifull as even win95 had the correct drivers built in for the thing.  XP, like 95 supported it properly right out of the box.

I'm currently using XP Pro on my main box.  I still have 2K sp2 running on my video/audio recording box, on my wife's computer, and my server.

Should you upgrade?  You didn't really describe a need to do so, so I'd recommend just staying with what's working now.  Are you talking about the computer that Pegasus3D is operating from?

XP has been solid as a rock for me in the month+ that I've been using it as the only OS on my main box.  I've had a few app crashes, but the OS hasn't gone down.  The only reset I've had is from one MS update a few weeks ago; other than that, it's been running 24/7.

Yes, it 'looks' more polished and ClearType rawks on my 19" monitor, but if these are your only reasons to upgrade, I'd say hold off until you have a pressing need to jump to XP.  If your 2K machine is stable now, I don't see a reason to alter it, IMO.

Cleartype is cool, and unless you have some hardware not working, about the only real reason to get XP. That said, if you can "find" XP for "nearly nothing" I'd go ahead and do it.

XP Pro is more secure and faster out of the box when compared to 2k Pro.

XP Pro also has better support for older games. I had a copy of Xcom that just refused to run on anything except for Win95. Installed XP and gave it a try, worked perfectly. I was fairly surprised.

XP is annoying. That stupid MSN messanger icon wont go away. And the explorer and find interfaces have been gayified.

Duff:

Open MSN Messenger Program.

Preferences.

Remove checkmark from "Start program when windows starts up"

Viola, gone.

Right click on "my computer" Select properties.
Click on Settings in "Performance"
Select "Adjust for best performance" Gayified gone.

XP is good, 2K is good... But if you don't "know" you have to upgrade, then fuck it, don't. :)

The problem is not that they can be gotten rid of, the problem is that they are there in the first place.

That's 20-30 secconds of my life I will never get back.

Also it would be a pain to do that on every computer it was installed on.

Sadly DeAthe, that's only a temporary solution. It may not say "Add your passport to XP!" crap anymore, but IE will automatically open MSN when you go to a passport site. That seems particularly iffy to me. I use it mostly to log in to my hotmail account without typing my password.

So write a deployment script! Geesh!

Reasons I luv XP at home:

I think the UI is absolutely lovely.
I loikes dumping files to CD and hitting "Burn" rather than mucking about with Nero.
WMPXP's high-speed WMA rippin'. Also, the whole WMPXP thang - people think it's like WMP7 - it's not. It's hugely better.
Fast User Switching ("Does this app I'm writing still run if I'm a "Limited" user? (wap-wap) "Yep"
Background updates - no more mucking about with Windows Update checking for drivers
Indexing seems to actually work this time around (that is, really fast and with no hiccups whislt it indexes).
Boot speed and app launch speed are great.
Drivers for everything ever.

HitScan, MSN is shite, just uninstall it, then it won't pop up. I was really confused for a minute when I read your comment, cause I'd never seen it, but I did uninstall MSN as soon as I put XP on my computer.

You'll probably have to edit the sysoc.inf file to uninstall MSN, but it's relatively painless. :)
