IMO WinMe doesn't do anything to deserve the scorn heaped upon it. Whilst I wouldn't care to run a 9x-kernel OS at all, if I had to, I would prefer to run WinMe.
Its great virtue is that it makes it harder for manufacturers to get away with criminally poor driver support.
But this upsets a lot of idiots.
