Geez!  This thing is slow

Ack.

XP is slow, and Luna looks a bit raw.

My GUI has locked up once already.

Anywhoo, how does everyone else like XP.  Mad! Loves it naturally :)

Where can I go to get good themes/skins/etc for it?

Wow, it's fusking slow!

I found it rather slow with my TNT2 Pro.  But my Mobility Radeon absolutely flies.  I'm thinking that it's very dependent on video drivers/hardware.

that was my first guess as well.

I'm downloading XP drivers for my AIW Radeon now.  10.6mb on a 33.6 connection...

....sucktacular....

Anywhoo, the default AIW drivers didn't even support OpenGL as a 9.35 score in Cinbench will attest.

Bad drivers always ruin the fun. Remember me complaining about my Radeon VE? I got some new XP approved drivers and it's been bliss ever since. Of course, the best drivers in the world won't help a crappy video card bend the laws of physics and suddenly be 1000% faster ;)
As far as liking it, I probly wouldn't go back to 2K unless I had to. (I've come to really like ClearType, and Arha's Hacked Luna scheme rocks. :) )

You can get Radeon VE's from some places online for $80, so unless you're saving up for "the next big thing" I'd just grab one of those. It'll likely improve your perception of XP quite a bit. (It's much easier to like when it's not crashing  )

I'd rather have a Matrox dual-head than a VE.

Unless someone other than matrox has figured out how to get dual head not to suck.

A valid concern. I have no idea how the dh works with this. I need another 19" monitor  Now, I'd fuckin hope matrox isn't the only company capable of making a decent dh driver, but this is ATi we're talkin 'bout here, so it really depends on "Are ya feelin' lucky, punk?"

What significant differences are there between Windows XP and Windows 2K?

I would think that Windows 2K would be the better deal if XP provides nothing of significance you may not need.

And is the display performace deal similar to OS X, i.e. advanced GUI engine that requires a new hardware acceleration?

Anyway I told my friend to stay away from using XP and just stick with 2K. Its all bootleg off course but i'm not concerned with his choice in ethics. I just warned him to stay away from XP if he was going to use bootlegs. Might bite him in the ass later on.

Funny though. XP product activiation is meant to stop piracy and within a week i have friends and colleges who are installing boot leg copies of XP.

Unfortunately you can't fight piracy by chaining the consumer.

What brand you looking at for teh new 19"?

I've always like hitachi's and their shaddow mask stuff.  yet the Samsung AG's get much praise from the AV crowd.

You'd have to ask Pizza for the Details, though I think XP is probably more polised underneath and includes things like Cleartype which sounds groovy.  The graphics aren't the same as OSX's, which uses bezier curves.  No current video solution accelerates these..

XP uses a bitmapped GUI.  I don't know how that is different than earlier windows but it seems to slow things down.

Funny, unless XP searched my network for an internet connection in order to activate, I may indeed have a copy that requires no activation (EDU version)

Product activation isn't all that bad of an anti piracy measure, however annoying it may be when you retire your old box to being a Linux firewall in lieu of faster hardware.  It looks like a downright stroke of genius compared to product keys.

I've got a black ViewSonic right now. It's pretty killer, especially with ClearType. I'm working on building 2 dual P2 servers at the moment though, so dh will have to wait a bit, heh.
