I'm sorry, but Venture and JB have a point.  MS may be smeaky at times but are more often simply "In Your Face" with their buisness tactics, but at least they don't hijack cultural icons to forward their own mythology and mystique to create a following and a brand loyalty whereby they can charge you up the wazoo for these cultural intangables.  

I'm sorry, but MS in it's misdeeds is downright Noble in comparison.  They may innovate by buying out competing companies, but at least they don't commit this kind of rape on the recently deceased while their bodies have yet to cool off.

It ain't that black and white.

The problem is the BF distortion field at work. You're either on one side or the other. Apple is a whore company. Microsoft is a whore company. Apple is a great company. Microsoft is a great company. And so on. The turth is we will never know for sure till person who changed the front page tells us who told him/her to do it and why.

Beyond that any choice you make as to who was right only reflects your bias.

I don't know if Apple did do it as a PR stunt. It might be possible it is a PR stunt, i wouldn't put it past them. But at the same time we are talking about George Harrison and the Beatles who MANY people (possibly including the top people at Apple) probably were rocking to when we weren't even born (or were sucking on nipples ).

In Apple's case I think I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps if they had displayed "Think Different" under it or something like that it would cross the line, but they way they presented it is respectful. The person who made the decision to put up the picture (jobs?) might have said "he here's a guy who fits into our marketing sceme real well, and we can take advantage of this." But he also could have said, "here's a guy I greatly respected, and I want to pay tribute to him in some way." You don't really know where their intentions lie, but I don't think I find it offensive.

I think that Apple are a little too keen to associate themselves with people whose connection with Apple is minimal, to say the least.  It's fine when it's Jeff Goldblum being a tool about "there is no step 3" -- he's consciously decided to associate himself with the company.  It irks me, however, that they do so with dead people -- and not just that; dead people who couldn't possibly be associated with Apple.  The recent Harrison picture merely revived this age-old criticism of Apple's marketing people.

He wasn't a technologist-- Steve Wozniak created the Apple I and II entirely by himself.  He didn't know anything about how business worked.  He was a terrible manager-- poorly organized, didn't listen, was late or missed meetings, was abusive to employees, the list goes on and on.  Jef Raskin, the real creator of the Macintosh, once sent a memo to Apple management about how terrible Jobs was at basically everything.
