Codec issues

Is there a way to determine what video/audio codec(s) a video file uses?  A friend sent me a CD with video files in various formats, and some have either audio or video that don't play.  I encountered issues like this in the past when someone used an ATi All-In-Wonder, which used its own ATi codec.

I first tried on 2K with WMP 6.4; opening some resulted in an error message of "an appropriate decoder could not be loaded" (note that I was online and WMP tried to d/l the 'appropriate codec').  I later tried on XPPro with WMP8; a number of vids played the audio, but video was replaced with "Ambience" display instead.  I saw that WMP tried to download a codec over the 'net but all I got was "Error downloading codec."

Most files are AVI or MPEG.  He hasn't told me what app he used to make the files, so I really don't know where to start.  Any ideas on how I can find what codecs are used in these files?

FWIW, TIA.

If its avi and you can't play the movie then chances are it might be divx.

so goto www.divx.com and download the 4.11 version. You could also download opendivx which some people do use but from my exerpience with OD on the PC is that you'll get some messed up colors.

Now if you have problems with the avi files in terms of sound, you'll need WMP 7.1 and for some stupid reason some wma sound files ONLY play on Windows 2000 and above, in other words, win2k and xp only.

Now there might be the rare chance that someone uses 3vix (based on the offical mpeg4 standards) which is no problem since you can get the codec from www.3vix.com
3ivx is not as common because its recent, but its pretty incredible what they are doing with the new codec.

divx is based on the rejected mpeg4 standard that microsoft proposed, but microsofts incredible dumb luck, divx has quickly become the standard codec used in avi's.

now this is all based on my experiences the last two weeks I've gotten into the whole dixv deal. Its a bitch at first but you get the hang of how to deal with them.

As to find out what codec's are being used. Sorry i have no idea. Sometimes you can get the info from the properties about the movie, but most of the time if you can't play the audio or video then it means you won't get the info about it either.

well i hope that helped.

edit: as far as i know, there is no such thing as Windows Media Player 8. The latest is 7.1, but the new codec is WM Audio and Video 8.

Confusing huh?

OW:

Thanks for the tip.  The Divx 4.11 codec did help, and I can play more files (still a few that don't, though).  I also downloaded the 4.11 that came with "The Playa" media player.  Surprisingly, I have a small number of clips that play in Playa but not WMP!  I personally don't want multiple media players installed, which is one reason why I wanna figure out the codecs involved.

Confusing huh?

Indeed!  Thanks again...

the other files you can't play, is it audio, video or both? And did you try those files on a win2k machine? WinNT doesn't count.

And do you also have OpenDivx installed? From what I understand (i could be wrong) stuff compressed with OpenDivx will not play with Divx 4.11

you shouldn't really have any problems with any avi as long as the divx codecs are in place and you have win2k/xp which has WMA/V 8

oh the cool thing about divx is that you can download porn much faster then with the traditional mpg.

Use gnutella and do a search for Kobe Tai. Its good to see people using divx/avi's for stuff like that. It beats the hell out of downloading a 50meg file when you can do better with a 10meg file. ;)

I haven't played all the offending files yet, but those with problems will play the audio but not the video.  I'll try them on a Win2K box (w/ WMV 6.4) as soon as I can, and let ya know what happens.

Nope, don't have it installed.

Then I'm glad that I'm half a world away from you!

Perhaps, but the place I d/led it from didn't mention "opendivx" on their 4.11 codec page.
